What's involved with this role: Environmental Protection Officer Job Reference Number: Hull 5267201 You will join a specialist team responsible for supporting the City Council’s Environmental Protection duties including the regulating of industrial processes (under LAPC), monitoring, maintaining and seeking to improve air quality, the assessment and remediation of contaminated land, preventing statutory nuisances and commenting on planning and licensing applications. This role focuses on managing statutory nuisances, responding to public requests, and working with the Anti-social Behaviour Team. You will be involved in addressing complaints related to the behaviour of individuals or businesses and resolving disputes, especially in sensitive and emotional situations. The role requires providing expert technical advice on statutory nuisances, ensuring effective and client-focused service delivery. You will work to mitigate the distress caused by such issues, while managing high volumes of service requests. Key requirements include:- The B.Tech in Environmental Health or appropriate equivalent qualification, i.e. NVQ Level 3 or considerable practical experience of dealing with environmental statutory nuisance issues Practical experience and competence in all areas of statutory nuisances with relevant experience and associated skills such as noise monitoring, modelling and interpretation IT literate Skills in education, advising, and creativity to support businesses, staff, customers, and clients, along with advocacy skills to attend court and provide evidence Investigative, analytical and interpretative skills to comprehend and enforce the requirements of legislation and codes of practice and determine the most effective course of action to safeguard public health Ability to analyse information and make justifiable decisions to resolve problems away from the office in difficult situations Communication and negotiation skills to effectively communicate requirements and to secure commitment to actions and changes in behaviour and working practices in order to comply with the law and safeguard public health In depth knowledge and understanding of a diverse range of environmental health specialist legislation covering the activities of the team, such as the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Control of Pollution Act 1974, Public Health Acts 1936, the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Acts 1976 and 1984 and the Clean Air Act 1993 plus relevant Codes of Practice, Industry Guides, Government Circulars and in-house procedures In depth knowledge and understanding of the statutory nuisance legislation Sound working knowledge of Regulatory Investigatory Powers Act, Freedom of Information Act, Data Protection Act, Human Rights Act Sound working knowledge and understanding of other related aspects of environmental health, health and safety, health education, food safety, pest control and housing to provide a holistic approach to investigations Excellent communication, negotiation, analytical and mediation skills to deal effectively with all people ranging from vulnerable customers to obstructive and abusive individuals and groups Proficient in writing clear, concise reports, statements, legal notices, and correspondence that may be used as legal evidence, following the PACE Act Excellent recording and reporting skills Ability to compile and present technical and legal advice concisely in correspondence, briefing papers, reports, presentations and documents for legal proceedings The ability to collect, collate and analyse data and produce succinct reports Please quote the Job Title & Vacancy Reference No. in your application, or we will be unable to match your CV to the role being applied for.
