RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Undergraduate Education/Clinical Module Lead for Surgery.
Overview
These unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education while broadening your clinical experience. Candidates will each complete 6 months in education and 6 months working clinically, with a 50 % educational and 50 % clinical service provision. Funding will be available for a PG qualification in medical education if the role is undertaken for a full 12 months and the applicant does not already hold one.
Clinical – General Surgery
1. The post holder will provide a patient‑centred service. They will work with general surgery colleagues to provide emergency general surgery services within the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and cross‑cover with vascular surgery, urology and ENT at a junior consultant level as part of the SAS rota duties.
2. The post holder will observe and comply with clinical and non‑clinical policies and procedures agreed with employees and management.
3. The post holder will be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues, gaining experience in caring for elective and emergency general surgical patients and acquiring skills in emergency, day‑case and elective HPB/Colorectal surgery.

* Working clinically across any ELHT site within this role.
Learning & Development
* Teaching experience is available even when working clinically. We host medical students from UCLan and Lancaster University, as well as PA, nursing, trainee ACP and allied health professional students.
* There is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre; various postgraduate meetings and events take place regularly and information can be obtained from the Postgraduate Administrator.
* During education time you will contribute to clinical placements of all learners, providing skills, ward‑based supervision, bedside teaching, lectures, case presentations, CBL/PBL, simulation, and supervision & assessment.
* Work with the education teams at ELHT and, where appropriate, from all our education partners.
* Collaborate and work closely with East Lancashire Primary Care educators where opportunities permit.
* Participate in curriculum committees and provide leadership and oversight to the ELHT Foundation School Medical Undergraduate Teaching Committee.
* Network with clinical staff to share best practice and promote standardised training and education across the organisation.
* Assist with the update of lesson plans and teaching resources, continually improving the quality of education using evidence‑based practice.
* Develop evaluation methods to assess the impact of education on patient care.
* Deliver programmes of learning, set up and maintain equipment for teaching sessions as required.
* Provide constructive feedback to learners on their performance.
* Produce regular reports and audit data on progress to the Clinical Education Lead, presented in clear, fluent, concise, and easily understood form.
* Actively promote equal opportunities for access to learning & development for all staff from all backgrounds.
* Act as an education team member with attendance at relevant meetings, as directed.
* As a student supervisor, you will oversee student(s) progress during the module and provide verbal and written feedback.
* You will be provided with a named educational supervisor and participate in the agreed personal development and appraisal plan.
* The candidate will complete a postgraduate certificate in medical education or other similar educational qualification.
* Your role will be a 50:50 split between education and clinical activities, including annual leave & study leave entitlements. The holiday and study leave entitlement should be taken equally over the 6‑month rotations between clinical and educational duties, with additional leave accrued for bank holidays.
* Work with partner universities/medical schools to undertake a project relating to medical education.
* Develop and deliver an effective pastoral system appropriate to the needs of each student group in your speciality.
Qualifications
* Knowledge of medical training and evidence of competence in relevant procedures.
* Knowledge of education and training issues from a UK‑based medical degree or at least 12 months previous NHS experience.
* Good communication skills with ability to motivate colleagues—medical and non‑medical.
* Ability to work in a team.
* Demonstrates professionalism in attitude and application.
Desirable Criteria
* Awareness of national agenda in relation to medical education and training, MBBS or equivalent.
* Full registration with the GMC and licence to practise.
* Successful completion of Foundation Training (as a minimum).
* Completed foundation training at a UK hospital or has 12 months experience working as a doctor in a UK hospital.
* Evidence of publications in medical education journals, experience of working in or delivering medical education.
* Experience of working with staff from different professional backgrounds.
* Experience in general surgery.
* Train‑the‑trainer / teaching, learning and assessment training qualification.
* Extensive experience of working or delivering medical education.
* ATLS, ALS or APLS qualification.
* Post‑grad qualification in medical education or equivalent.
* Flexibility in working hours to meet the requirements of the post.
* A genuine interest in teaching medical students.
* Access to private transport.
* Health must permit carrying out the duties of the post; you must have appropriate UK professional registration.
