Job overview

South Tees NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer the posts of Senior Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The posts are for six months in the first instance, renewable for a further six months, subject to satisfactory progress and approval.

We are looking for dynamic forward thinking individuals who will join a friendly, committed team who provide anaesthesia and critical care for approximately 1000 cardiac and 700 thoracic cases per year.

Our varied theatre caseload includes all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery with particular focus on minimally invasive aortic and mitral surgery and major aortic work. We have an established TAVI programme alongside expanding thoracic programme which includes: VAT lobectomies, thymectomies and robotic thoracic surgery. A robotic mitral surgery programme is in the planning stages. Our critical care unit is a specialist 10 bed unit caring for post-op cardiac and thoracic patients, and in addition receives emergency cardiology admissions. Our patient outcomes are consistently excellent.

Main duties of the job

These posts are ideally suited to senior anaesthetic trainees in possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) who are looking to gain further experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care medicine and are considering a career within the specialty.

The successful applicants will join a busy but supportive department. Out of hours, the primary responsibility is to the cardiac intensive care unit, however the opportunity for supervised emergency cath lab and theatre work is available. The rota includes advanced critical care practitioners (ACCPs), rotating anaesthetic specialty registrars and senior advanced trainees in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. Dedicated consultant supervision will be provided in line with clinical competence and previous experience. Salary will be in keeping with equivalent salary scales for doctors in training. Study leave and annual leave will be aligned with Trust policy.
