Job Summary
The NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Newcastle Hospitals) and Newcastle University.
We are one of 28 Clinical Research Facilities across England awarded the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility designation to support delivery of early phase clinical trials, experimental medicine studies and other complex studies that could not be delivered in the routine settings of the NHS.
The NIHR Newcastle CRF offers expertise in a broad range of disease areas at our four research units:
* Early Phase Research Unit (EPRU) – supports a broad range of disease areas in both children and adults, with a special focus on phase 1 studies, advanced therapies and infectious disease.
* Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) – co‑located with the Centre of In Vivo Imaging (CIVI), supports research into ageing syndromes, movement disorders, multiple long‑term conditions and studies involving advanced imaging techniques.
* Dental Research Unit (DRU) – focuses on studies in dentistry and oral medicine.
* Paediatric Research Unit (PRU) – supports a broad range of research in child health including paediatric oncology.
Main duties of the job
Our aim is to support effective delivery of high‑quality, cutting‑edge early phase and experimental medical research by providing a state‑of‑the‑art facility and specialist workforce and knowledge. We work closely with patient and public partners and academic and commercial organisations within a national framework of UKCRFs and other NIHR infrastructure, putting patients at the forefront of everything we do.
The Research Support Manager will:
* Facilitate research feasibility assessments, ensuring timely and efficient initiation and delivery of clinical research.
* Implement, standardise and optimise quality, financial and data systems to support activity and performance reporting.
* Lead and oversee the Clinical Trial Coordination, Data Management and administrative functions within the team.
* Analyse complex information from a variety of sources, propose improvements, manage competing priorities and support capacity and demand planning.
* Maintain an awareness of all current and upcoming studies on the portfolio, acting as an escalation point for issues.
* Lead team meetings, support the training and induction of new staff and provide direct line‑management of research support staff.
About the Organisation
Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts daily across multiple sites including Freeman Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Health Innovation Neighbourhood, Newcastle Dental Hospital, Newcastle Fertility Centre, Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Northern Genetics Service and Cramlington Manor Walks. We provide state‑of‑the‑art diagnostics in radiology and pathology and work across the NHS, community sites and our Regent Point office in Gosforth.

Essential - Qualifications & Education
* Degree level education or equivalent experience in scientific or medical research.
Desirable - Qualifications & Education
* Leadership/management qualification.
* Post‑graduate certificate in clinical research or another relevant qualification.
Essential - Knowledge & Experience
* Significant experience in clinical trial administration and coordination in the NHS, academic and/or commercial settings.
* In‑depth understanding of the clinical research process, patient information systems and relevant standards and legislation.
* Knowledge of GCP, data protection legislation (GDPR, Caldicott) and confidentiality procedures.
* Knowledge of HR policies and procedures.
Desirable - Knowledge & Experience
* Experience of managing staff, budgeting and delivering service improvements.
* Specialty‑specific knowledge and experience.
* Experience working with research funders, including industry and NHS.
* Experience using electronic patient records.
Essential - Skills & Abilities
* Excellent written and oral communication and negotiation skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills, able to influence in contentious situations.
* Intermediate IT competence.
* Excellent organisational skills, able to manage workload to meet tight deadlines.
