The role
Controls Commissioning Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Controls Commissioning Engineer to join a specialist team responsible for bringing bespoke automated machinery from the completion of build through to customer acceptance and sign-off.
Working on cutting-edge automation projects, you will play a key role during the commissioning phase, overcoming technical challenges and ensuring systems perform to the highest standards. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys problem-solving, hands-on engineering, and working with advanced control systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Programme and modify control systems using PLCs, servo drives, robots, and other specialised controllers to meet customer requirements.
* Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and controls-related issues.
* Perform fault finding and operational assessments on mechanisms and automated systems.
* Implement improvements to enhance system performance through electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, or software modifications.
* Carry out structured testing and document results to support further development and optimisation.
* Maintain accurate records of modifications and commissioning activities.
* Provide regular feedback to project teams regarding progress and technical issues.
* Participate in internal design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
* Support customer inspections and acceptance testing.
* Travel to customer sites across the UK and internationally when required.
Skills and Experience
Essential
* Relevant vocational qualifications or completion of a recognised electrical and/or mechanical apprenticeship.
* Experience programming PLCs and HMIs using platforms such as:
* Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Festo, Codesys
* Knowledge of servo drives, VFDs, remote I/O, Ethernet, and Profibus networks.
* Strong electrical, pneumatic, or mechanical experience within the automation industry and the ability to interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics and technical drawings.
* Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work independently and manage priorities to meet deadlines.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
* Thorough understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices.
Desirable
* Experience working with 6-axis robot systems.
* Previous experience commissioning automated machinery or bespoke equipment.
