Birmingham City University is a large, diverse, and popular place to study. Defined and driven by our values: We Create Opportunity, We Think Differently, and We Build Community. It makes us passionate and proud of our University and our City.
The University is ambitious and has a strong focus on student experience. We are always looking for talented individuals, filled with similar ambition and desire to support and progress our position in the Higher Education space.
We have an opportunity for an experienced IT Student Systems Tester who will be responsible for completing thorough end-to-end testing of the student systems following the development of enhancements, new functionality, configuration, customisation and upgrades. This will include working with the IT Student Systems Team detailing test schedules, plans, recording of results, error reporting and escalation. The testing covers functional, non-functional, unit, integration and system testing, each with specific objectives.
The purpose of this role is to guarantee resiliency of service, and to minimise disruption, through the implementation of developments to student systems that are quality-assured before transitioning to production environments.
* Support the development of test strategies in collaboration with the IT Student Systems Team including test schedules, plans, recording of results, error reporting and escalation. The testing covers functional, non-functional, unit, integration and system testing, each with specific objectives.
* Ensure that all testing is completed in the test student systems environments using representative data samples that are comparable to the production environment to evidence quality-assured test controls.
* Support the development, documentation, and execution of test plans and results to ensure all development meets data quality, validation and business requirements. Record and analyse actions and results, and maintain a defect register. Collaborate with the IT Student Systems Team to resolve issues.
* Take responsibility for creating test cases using detailed technical analysis of both functional and non-functional specifications (such as reliability, efficiency, usability, maintainability, and portability). This includes creating traceability records from test cases back to requirements.
Candidates with experience in the use and testing of corporate student systems will be welcomed. Candidates must have education to a relevant vocational qualification (such as NVQ Level 3) or be able to demonstrate equivalent work experience and relevant skills. The ideal candidate will also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrate experience of testing methodologies including test management and planning.
The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
