Consultant Radiologist Chest Cardiac Nuclear Med & Head & Neck Imaging Closing date: 13 June 2026
This post is for a Substantive Consultant Radiologist with a Sub-speciality Interest in Chest and Cardiac and Head and Neck Imaging with in post training in Nuclear Medicine to support the Skin Cancer service. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Radiology (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
Applicants that are non‑UK trained, will be required to provide evidence of equivalence in the UK CCT on successful application.
Interviews will take place on Friday 10th July 2026.
Main duties of the job The successful applicant is required to maintain the expanding workload of the department including supporting the extensive department input into MDT meetings, to meet waiting list targets and to enable the introduction of extended working. The appointed individual would be expected to contribute to the general workload of the department. There is flexibility in the number of general sessions expected. There are currently 23 full time equivalent consultants in post and one Associate Specialist, one specialty doctor and one Locum consultant.
The department's current consultants operate very much as a team and are looking for colleagues who are keen to work in this environment. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the general workload and participate in the oncall rota, Currently 1 in 20. The consultants are second on call. The initial contact for on call imaging is provided by a central on call Hub staffed by regional STs supported by an integrated RIS (Wellbeing) and PACS - Carestream Global Worklist. This service is provided on weekdays from 5pm to 9am and during weekends. The on‑call radiologist is on site on weekends from 9am‑3pm.
The successful candidate will take part in the diagnostic general on call rota.

Job responsibilities Job Plan
The applicant will be contracted for 10 Programmed Activities as per the new consultant contract, 7.0/ 7.5 related to direct clinical care, 0.5 for the on‑call commitment and 2.5/2 for supporting professional activity.
1.5 SPA is towards individual Core CPD for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for Clinical Supervision, Audit and Mandatory training. Additional 0.5 SPA will be awarded for additional roles undertaken within the department for eg: Medical Appraiser, Cross‑Sectional Lead etc.
The following is an example of a possible programme to reflect the number of PAs for clinical work. The details of this will be negotiated with the successful candidate. The department does run an extended routine service out of normal working hours with consultant input into evening lists and weekends, successful candidates will be expected to contribute to this.
A final, more detailed job plan would be discussed prior to appointment taking into account departmental needs and service commitments. USS and procedure lists will be finalised after successful interview.
The degree of subspecialty work to general is flexible depending on the individual's experience. The appointee would be expected to cover for colleagues around study and sick leave and a degree of flexibility within the job plan is expected.
The department currently has Specialist registrars providing 1st on call with consultant cover via teleradiology. Current on call commitment is 1 in 19 (Band 3%, category A).
The consultant will be expected to participate in Audit as part of the annual appraisal process. Participation in research activities is actively encouraged and supported. The hospital has a defined programme of medical audit which has recently been restructured. Members of the Department of Radiology are active in the management and promotion of the Trusts clinical Governance Strategy.

Qualifications

Familiarity with PACs and other IT systems relevant to Radiology
Evidence of appropriate teaching experience within the last 3 years

Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit / research within team structure within the last 3 years
Exposure to General Nuclear Medicine reporting
Understanding of methods of appraisal and assessment of radiology trainees.
