Offer description

Overview

Senior / Principal Hydrologist role at Haskoning within the Environment Resilience Renewables Group. The team focuses on delivering environmental solutions across flood risk, hydrology, hydrogeology, river restoration and related disciplines for infrastructure, renewables and other sectors.

Our water environment team is involved in high-profile projects including water recycling facilities, reservoirs and river catchment initiatives. The group seeks to grow its water environment capability to meet market demand.

The Role

We require a Senior / Principal Hydrologist to join our flood risk and hydraulic modelling team, delivering hydrological analysis to support hydraulic modelling projects for clients such as the Environment Agency, IDBs, LLFAs, Rivers Trusts, infrastructure and renewable energy companies. You will work on projects including urban and rural flood risk, nature-based solutions, natural flood management and hydromorphology. You should have skills in hydrological modelling, data analysis, data interpretation and presentation of hydrological results. The role may suit a part-time candidate or someone with a wider skillset who can support the team in the delivery of flood risk and/or hydraulic modelling projects, as this role is unlikely to comprise a full-time delivery of hydrological analysis.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Hydrology Expertise: Demonstrate significant technical experience in key areas of hydrological analysis and defend approaches with clients, regulators and stakeholders.
* Deliver hydrological analyses including flood frequency analysis using methodologies such as FEH Statistical Method, Rainfall-runoff methods (ReFH2), FSR methods and Lowland / Pumped Catchment approaches; use hydrological modelling packages like ReFH2 and WINFAP.
* Produce and deliver hydrological analyses for low flows relevant to weir removal, fish passage and river restoration schemes including channel design and wetland features; application of LowFlows2 modelling software.
* Knowledge of hydrometry and fluvial hydraulics to inform hydrology; analyse and report hydrometric data including flow gauge rating curves and hydraulic performance of weirs and channels.
* Experience with natural flood management (NFM) and nature-based solutions (NBS) options; understand how different hydrological approaches influence hydraulic modelling.
* GIS Proficiency: Proficient in GIS applications (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and open-source datasets/tools.
* Flood Risk Assessment: Provide specialist hydrological input for Flood Risk Assessments with understanding of UK flood risk policies.
* Technical Reporting: Ability to write clear, concise technical reports for audiences such as the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities, IDBs, private developers and the public.
* Project Management: Prepare proposals, manage resources, subcontractors, contracts and invoicing; act as project lead for smaller projects, understanding contract and cost implications.
* Quality Assurance: Contribute to best practices and identify innovative approaches; mentor junior staff to ensure quality and innovation.
* Collaboration: Work effectively with other consultants and disciplines to deliver comprehensive, sustainable design solutions.
* Client Relations: Build and maintain client relationships and coordinate with Project Manager, Project Director and Hydraulic Modeller(s).
* Flexibility: Perform additional duties as required by management.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

* Bachelor's degree in an analytical subject (Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography).
* Minimum of 10 years' relevant experience in development and delivery of hydrological studies and catchment analysis.
* Thorough understanding of wider catchment hydrology and catchment processes.
* Hydrological modelling to derive design event peak flows and flood hydrographs using FEH methodologies (Statistical Method, ReFH2), FSR methods and Lowland / Pumped Catchment methods.
* Low flow studies / drought assessments including LowFlows2 modelling.
* Proven GIS experience in QGIS and ArcGIS.
* Excellent communication and analytical skills; ability to write high-quality concise technical reports.
* Ability to manage commercial aspects of projects; carrying out technical reviews of hydrological analysis and calculations by others.

Desirable:

* Master's degree in an appropriate subject.
* Chartered, or working towards chartership with CIWEM, ICE or similar body; or progressing structured training in relevant discipline.
* Experience in 1D and 2D fluvial hydraulic modelling (Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, ESTRY) and/or surface water modelling.
* Experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments.
* Experience in water resource assessments and modelling.
* Basic programming skills (e.g., R, Python, Excel Script, VBA) to support analytical tool development.
* Database management for hydrological data analysis.
* Experience with the UK planning process and dealing with private and commercial developers.
