About the Opportunity
We are recruiting on behalf of a leading London-based scenic construction company with an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality work across theatre, television, and live events. They are seeking a Head of Department – Engineering to lead a skilled team and oversee complex, creative build projects in metal and associated materials.
This is an exciting leadership role for someone with strong technical expertise, proven people management skills, and the ability to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the Engineering Department in the accurate fabrication of scenic builds from complex drawings.
* Plan and oversee departmental schedules in collaboration with the Workshop Manager.
* Maintain a proactive approach to Health & Safety and sustainability practices
* Ensure safe operation, upkeep, and maintenance of departmental equipment.
* Promote departmental cohesion, ensuring strong communication and staff morale.
* Oversee training, apprenticeships, and work experience placements.
* Lead and support on-site build teams when required.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
* Strong fabrication experience in scenic, theatre, TV, FIlm, Events, or related industries.
* Skilled in MIG and TIG welding (Engineering NVQ or coded welding qualifications preferred).
* Ability to interpret and fabricate from complex technical drawings.
* Extensive knowledge of materials and build techniques.
* Proven leadership and project scheduling experience.
* Health & Safety awareness (H&S qualifications desirable).
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Proficiency with Windows, Google Docs, and related software.
* Highly organised, calm under pressure, and able to prioritise effectively.
