Job Title: Senior Fellow – Intensive Care Medicine

Start Date: 5th August 2026

Contract Type: Fixed term

End Date: 3rd August 2027

Purpose: Training contract to provide structured training and supervised clinical development. The postholder will also contribute to service delivery, providing defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.


Responsibilities

* Provide first‑class clinical service and effective middle‑grade leadership (ST3 or above) to staff on the unit.
* Support clinical decision‑making for medical and nursing staff.
* Lead the education programme for junior doctors in collaboration with the consultant workforce.
* Conduct clinical practice in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies.
* Engage in the Trust’s and Division’s services plans.
* Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
* Comply with UHS Trust’s mandatory training requirements.
* Actively participate in the departmental education programme.
* Work within the framework of team decisions and demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.
* Act as a senior member of the critical care team, supporting the registrar / airway rota (ST3 or above).
* Assess, admit, stabilise and formulate clinical plans for critically ill adult patients, including ventilation, vasopressors, renal support and advanced airway skills.
* Perform daily reviews of ICU patients, present findings to the duty Critical Care Consultant, organise and interpret investigations.
* Review critically unwell patients outside the unit as directed by the duty Consultant and critical care outreach team.
* Support learning and development of wider critical care clinical teams.


Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Core training in a relevant specialty (e.g., ICM or Anaesthesia).
* At least 2 years’ experience of work in the NHS or equivalent.
* Competent airway skills.
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement.

Desirable Criteria

* MRCP, FRCS, MCEM or similar.
* Current ATLS or ALS certification.
* Qualification in Medical Education.

Essential Criteria

* Evidence of working effectively in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and its impact on patients, visitors and staff.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
* Good organisational skills – prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
* Maintain calmness, compassion and responsiveness in changing circumstances.
* Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Basic IT skills.

Desirable Criteria

* Experience in research activity or evidence of commitment and enthusiasm.
* Experience of FUSIC or willingness to learn.
* Experience of quality improvement or audit.
* Experience teaching / training other professionals, including SIM.

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed fellow doctors and dentists. A named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for CPD is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills, with a basic salary plus additional remuneration for extra hours (e.g., additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours that attract enhanced pay).
