Job overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Band 7 Highly Specialist Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapist to join our senior therapies team at Newham University Hospital. The successful candidate will lead the operational delivery of the MSK outpatient service, managing a complex caseload and providing specialist physiotherapy assessments and treatments for patients with acute, chronic, or complex musculoskeletal conditions. Working autonomously and within a multi-disciplinary team, you will play a key role in service development, quality improvement, and clinical supervision of junior staff and students. You will also support administrative teams, contribute to training programmes, and ensure compliance with professional and organisational standards. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering patient-centred, evidence-based care that aligns with our WECARE values.


Main duties of the job

As a Band 7 Highly Specialist MSK Physiotherapist, you will provide advanced clinical assessment, treatment, and discharge planning for a diverse outpatient caseload. You will utilise expert clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to develop individualised treatment plans, incorporating manual therapy, exercise programmes, education, and other interventions. You will supervise and mentor junior physiotherapists, assistants, and students, supporting their development through formal appraisals and clinical supervision. You will lead on service evaluation, audit, and quality improvement initiatives, contributing to service redesign where necessary. Additionally, you will collaborate with consultants, nursing, and allied health professionals across Barts Health sites, ensuring seamless patient care. You will maintain accurate clinical records, adhere to infection control policies, manage departmental workflows, and participate in cross-site training and service development activities.

Person specification


Experience

* Documented evidence of CPD, in accordance with HCPC recommendations
* Experience of working as part of a team uni-professional and multi- professional team
* Advice, supervision, appraisal, training and support to more junior staff, support staff and students
* Clinical experience encompassing exercise therapy, manual therapy, pain management and patient education.
* Experience of audit, service development or quality improvement projects
* Experience of sole working as part of an out of hours emergency
* Involvement in national clinical interest group


Skills

* Good knowledge of current best practice in physiotherapy in the relevant setting
* Specialist clinical skills in musculoskeletal outpatients
* Understanding and application of risk management
* Understand legal responsibilities of the profession and the associated code of ethics
* Ability to organise and prioritise own and more junior staffs workload and supervise support staff in this field.
* Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities and support other staff in this field
* Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities and support other staff in this field
* Demonstrate understanding and previous participation in activity to support the clinical governance agenda
* In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group


Knowledge

* Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy
* Registration on the Health and Care Professions Council
* Evidence of current CPD in MSK physiotherapy
* Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
* On-going, current or recent formal education in MSK therapy


Other

* Supervisory & appraisal skills of other staff including junior staff / support staff / students
* Ability to pass on knowledge and deliver training both internally within the profession and externally to other staff groups
* Committed to lifelong and self-directed learning
* After induction, to be able to actively participate as an appraiser to the Trust IPR system
* Committed to personal and team development
* Ability to present information both orally and written in a clear and logical manner
* Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes
* Ability to cope with working in a busy or stressful environment and with emotional or aggressive patients/carers
* Able to carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and carry out concurrent activities
