Glasgow (Glasgow City)
NHS National Services Scotland
Posted: 18h ago
Offer description

Overview

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Shift pattern: on call.

Contract: Fixed term post until May 2027.

Location: Royal Hospital for Children at the South Glasgow Hospitals campus.

Purpose and suitability

This post is primarily aimed at individuals pursuing a paediatric surgical career who wish to gain exposure to, and experience in, a high quality surgical placement in a tertiary paediatric centre. It offers the opportunity to develop and expand experience in Surgical Paediatrics and to develop clinical and professional competence in a purposeful and supervised manner as an assist to overall CV development. The post would be most suitable for doctors committed to a career in Paediatric Surgery and wishing to develop skills in a busy tertiary centre.

Although this post is not currently accredited as a training post, the content is organised to mirror Higher Surgical Training dependent upon the experience level of the successful applicant. The post holder will be supervised to the same level as individuals undertaking Surgical Training and will have competence and progression reviewed regularly and at the end of the post.

Responsibilities and learning opportunities

The post holder will be encouraged to support, teach and supervise junior medical staff and to teach medical students. They will be expected to participate fully in the educational activities of the department or associated specialties and will have access to the departmental surgical teaching programme and the Paediatric Surgery Teaching Programme. Senior Clinical Fellows will be allocated an educational supervisor to help set learning objectives, with clinical supervisors who will conduct regular assessment and appraisal of progress. The post includes involvement in educational activities and ongoing learning opportunities aligned to the department’s programmes.

Limitations and educational framework

There is no dedicated funding for courses or external meetings; leave for such purposes will be by mutual negotiation. Post holders will be expected to register and work with an online portfolio and gather appropriate evidence for revalidation to undergo an in-house Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) at the end of their post. The clinical experience, supervision and competency progression will be equivalent to the accredited training programme, including formal teaching and opportunities to develop surgical skills.

Global objectives and agreement

Global learning objectives for all posts follow the principles of the current curriculum. Individual fellows will be required to sign a training programme agreement and a learning agreement with their assigned educational supervisor shortly after taking up post. The post is based primarily at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, within the Department of Paediatric Surgery, with possible outreach work at other centres in the west of Scotland. This is not an accredited training opportunity, but there will be ongoing commitment to provide appropriate education and training for the level of experience.
