At AEON, we create clean, resilient infrastructure for remote and island communities. We’re designing and piloting a local electricity-sharing system that allows neighbours to exchange power and reduces reliance on the central grid. The goal is to make energy more resilient, flexible, and community-driven. This builds on the solar generation we have already sold to remote island communities. It further ties into a broader effort to rethink infrastructure for places where stability and access are often limited with the ambition of shaping the future power grid of whole countries.
This role involves designing, testing, and deploying a first pilot of this new energy distribution system — with a focus on simplicity, safety, and field reliability. It’s an early-stage engineering challenge that draws on known technologies, but requires careful reasoning, clean system logic, and a good understanding of how things behave outside the lab.
You’ll take the lead on key parts of the system’s architecture and testing strategy, working within a small R&D team. We place a strong emphasis on structured thinking, practical trade-offs, and clear documentation — and we’re looking for someone who approaches their work the same way. You should be confident working independently, open to iteration and feedback, and motivated by real-world engineering.
What you’ll do:
* Lead the design of key parts of a local energy-sharing system — such as power routing, protection, and control strategies — in dialogue with the team.
* Run small-scale hardware and software tests our developing office workshop to validate system behaviour.
* Maintain clear documentation of assumptions, logic, and design choices.
* Collaborate on modelling, planning, and deployment strategies.
* Support integration with solar systems and small-scale generators already in the field.
Required skills:
* Degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
* At least 1-2 years of engineering working experience.
* Interest in decentralised energy systems and real-world infrastructure.
* Comfortable applying wiring regulations and safety standards.
* Strong communication — especially around system logic and decision-making.
* Able to take ownership of technical areas while working as part of a team.
* Experience working on off-grid or distributed energy systems.
* Familiarity with modelling tools (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink) and coding languages (Python).
* Familiarity with coding sensor tools (Arduino etc) and communication protocols (CAN, Modbus etc.).
* Understanding of low-voltage protection and control.
* Experience building or testing small-scale hardware setups.
