Overview
Senior DevOps Engineer - Cloud Resilience at Seccl. This role sits in the Cloud Resilience team and focuses on shaping and evolving the platform that underpins Seccl’s investment products. You’ll enjoy understanding engineering problems and enabling teams to self-serve their needs, viewing the cloud platform as a product and engineering as your customer.
Role and Team
The role is within our Cloud Resilience team—a critical squad within our engineering organisation responsible for empowering squads to build and run their own services. We primarily use AWS, including Lambda, ECS, SQS, API Gateway, among others. Our database is MongoDB, and our observability platform is Datadog. The application is written in TypeScript/Node.js and our infrastructure is defined in Terraform.
Responsibilities
* Architect, implement, and maintain scalable, secure infrastructure in AWS using Terraform.
* Design cloud-native solutions using MongoDB, Lambda, API Gateway, and other AWS services with a strong focus on serverless.
* Contribute to incident response efforts, production readiness, and reliability initiatives across engineering squads.
* Enhance observability and platform insight through actionable alerting and data visibility using Datadog.
* Continuously improve CI/CD processes with GitHub Actions, reducing friction in delivery pipelines.
* Collaborate with software engineers (working in Node.js/TypeScript) to ensure secure, performant, and resilient applications.
* Mentor engineers and champion DevOps culture and best practices across teams.
What’s In It For You
* 27 days holiday + bank holidays (some flexibility) + day off on your birthday + three days per year for Dependant leave.
* Two volunteering days per year.
* Length-of-service award – one month paid sabbatical at eight years.
* 6% employer pension contribution and life assurance.
* Private medical insurance with AXA Health.
* Enhanced parental leave.
* MacBook and up to £500 home office setup budget.
* £750 per person learning budget.
* Option to work abroad for up to six weeks a year.
* Health and wellbeing initiatives including free therapy via Wellness Cloud and mental health support via Headspace.
* Strong financial wellbeing focus including access to Octopus Money, Octopus Share Incentive Plan, will writing via Octopus Legacy and Seccl Invest.
* Perkbox – Flexi-points with discounts on coffee, gym, and retail.
* Cycle to Work and Octopus Electric Vehicle Leasing programs.
What we’re looking for
* You’re a pragmatic DevOps engineer with experience in regulated environments, balancing delivery with compliance and operational excellence.
* You’re confident with JavaScript/TypeScript-based applications and collaborating with development teams.
* You understand MongoDB and can diagnose, design, and optimise for scale and resilience.
* You care deeply about observability and build actionable alerts for engineers.
* You’re fluent in AWS best practices, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and CI/CD tooling like GitHub Actions.
* You’ve had exposure to architectural decisions and are willing to own platform-level outcomes.
What we’re looking for to rule out
* You rely on a lot of top-down direction. You’ll have freedom and ownership here, but you’ll need to shape your own progression.
* You’re not comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Our speed and scalability require you to act quickly and think on your feet.
* You struggle to follow through on ideas. We value people who do what they say they will.
* You don’t like change. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and rapid growth.
Location
Flexible-hybrid with travel to Bath, London and Edinburgh a couple times a month.
Interview process
Interviewing is two-way and conversational. The process typically includes:
* Stage 1 – one-hour cloud system design interview (virtual).
* Stage 2 – one-hour Terraform code review interview (virtual).
* Stage 3 – 45-minute bar-raiser culture-based interview (virtual).
How to apply
Please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered. You should expect to hear back within one to two weeks of applying.
