Job summary

The inpatient services at Roseberry Park Hospital are provided within four acute commissioned admissions units, totalling 66 beds distributed in four single sex wards (two male and two female wards). The inpatient services are led by consultant psychiatrists and supported by Specialty Doctors and Resident Doctors, with additional support from a Nurse Consultant approved for adult services at Roseberry Park Hospital.

The current ward arrangements include two 14–18 bedded units for South Tees (Middlesbrough, and Redcar & Cleveland) and two 14–18 bedded units for North of Tees areas (Stockton and Hartlepool). There may be out-of-area patients on any ward depending on requirements.

We operate the Purposeful Inpatient Admissions Process (PIPA), enabling daily consultant-led inpatient services with high quality and performance. This has supported bed occupancy to be under 50, in line with the NHS 10-year plan, currently in 3 wards with under 50 patients at any time.

The Tees Urgent Care comprises Liaison Psychiatry, Crisis Assessment and Home Treatment Services, and a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. Roseberry Park Hospital also has a 24-hour crisis assessment suite on site, supported by Crisis and Inpatient Medical Staffing.

Main duties of the job: Consultants are allocated new admissions as per rota and lead assessment, formulation and treatment within the PIPA model. They will be supported by Specialty Doctors, Specialist Registrars and Resident Doctors under supervision. The average number of inpatients the Consultant Psychiatrist will be involved with at any time is anticipated to be 10–14, with RC responsibilities retained by the Consultant Psychiatrist. There is excellent multi-disciplinary team working. The average length of stay is 35 days, with a target to reduce to align with national bed occupancy recommendations. The Specialty Doctor will assist with Tribunal reports and attending hearings as needed, but the Consultant retains ultimate responsibility for matters assigned to ACs. The post holder will work closely with consultant psychiatrists in Urgent Care services.
