Job Summary
We are a rapidly growing area within college and as such require additional technical support. We are looking for a general art and design technician with skills in a range of areas.
The Creative and Digital department comprises of Art and Design, Media, Performing Arts and Esports with a commercial theatre also on site. There are a wide range of vocational programmes from level 1-3 on offer. The area benefits from a wide range of specialist vocational equipment. In the area of art and design this includes a dye room, fashion and textiles room, workshop spaces, classrooms, specialist print room, darkroom, 3D workshop and art studios. Additionally, the area has many computer rooms for graphics and photography work.
As Technician for the Art and Design department you will be able to work across a range of areas, supporting staff and students to prepare materials and equipment for lessons and where required support staff in lessons where students are using machinery, tools and equipment. The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance, distribution and storage of consumables, tools and equipment related to the vocational area. You will manage an effective and efficient storage system, maintain specialist tools, equipment and machinery to ensure staff and students have access to working and maintained resources at the right time for delivery and projects. This may include arranging servicing of sewing machines, washing printing screens, preparing materials and resources, making painting frames, mixing inks or dyes, cleaning work areas and setting up photography equipment. Whilst an art and design background is essential, training on individual tasks can be given. Knowledge of 3D design and technology would be an advantage but not essential.
You will be responsible for ensuring all equipment is logged in and out and is ready for collection and return at agreed times and ensure that all equipment is fit for use and returned in good working order.
You will support delivery teams and student groups by setting up a variety of resources and teaching aids and you will manage the safe operation of specialist facilities and ensure all resources, facilities and equipment comply with Health and Safety regulation. You will also ensure all specialist areas and facilities are clean and tidy and comply with Health and Safety regulations. You will support in the induction of students.
You will ensure all equipment is maintained and ready for use and be required to undertake essential minor maintenance tasks. Larger maintenance tasks would be completed by external companies.
You will be responsible for updating health and safety documentation and follow health and safety guidance. Training in COSHH will be provided.
You will assist the teaching teams in preparation of equipment, areas and workshops as well as supporting staff and students with the use of such equipment and processes within workshop settings.
