Job Summary
The Medical Examiner (ME) system was introduced in 2019 to independently review and confirm cause of death in all patients who died within the Trust. Medical Examiners are supported by medical examiner's officers (MEO) who administer the service and serve as points of contact and sources of expertise for healthcare professionals, relatives, the coroner, and Registration services.
Since September 2024, it has been a statutory requirement to review all deaths in the local health community of West Northamptonshire, covering all healthcare providers. The medical examiner officer team includes 3 MEOs and 1 lead MEO. We are recruiting 1 lead MEO to replace the retiring current lead MEO.
We seek a candidate with excellent communication skills, leadership qualities, decision-making ability, and team spirit. The candidate should be comfortable engaging with the bereaved, stakeholders including the HMC Coroner, regional and national Medical Examiner teams, and clinical staff across healthcare settings.
Main Duties
1. Lead a team of Medical Examiner Officers to ensure high-quality, timely services, including issuing death certificates.
2. Communicate compassionately with the bereaved.
3. Coordinate with stakeholders such as the NGH Bereavement Service, HM Coroner, and healthcare providers.
4. Maintain accurate records for local and national purposes.
