We are seeking a reliable and proactive Recreation Assistant & Lifeguard to join our new Sports Centre team. This is a key role focused on providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the safety of all users, including pupils, staff, families, and the local community. The Sports Centre features state-of-the-art facilities and is a vital hub for fitness, recreation, and community engagement.
The Role
Reporting to the Sports Centre General Manager and the Duty Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Sports Centre, including the gym, reception, and the swimming pool. This role requires a strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for everyone. You will also be expected to be a confident and friendly presence, assisting customers and ensuring all facility operations run smoothly.
Your key responsibilities include:
* Supervision and Safety: Ensuring the centre's Normal Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plans are followed at all times. This includes providing constant supervision of the gym and as a qualified lifeguard, supervising the swimming pool, and responding to accidents or emergencies as needed.
* Customer Service: Providing the highest level of customer service by welcoming users, handling enquiries, and logging attendance. You will also be required to instruct gym users on the correct and safe use of equipment.
* Facility Management: Assisting with the set-up of equipment for various sports programs and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness throughout the centre. This includes completing regular checks, water testing, and spot cleaning.
* Operational Support: Operating reception and till systems, opening and closing the facility, and using various computer software systems. You will also assist with the maintenance and reporting of any damaged equipment or facility concerns.
About You
We are looking for a reliable and confident individual with a strong sense of initiative and a commitment to safety. You should be a team player with excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to customer service.
Essential Skills & Qualities:
* A current National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ).
* A reliable and proactive nature with excellent timekeeping.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Confidence and the ability to respond proactively to customer needs.
* A friendly and firm demeanour to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
* The ability to maintain an acceptable level of fitness to meet the requirements of lifeguard training and time trials.
Desirable Skills:
* Previous experience working in a sports environment.
* A Level 2 or equivalent fitness industry qualification.
* A valid First Aid Certificate.
* Qualifications to instruct fitness classes.
What We Offer
* Start Date: From November 2025.
* Salary: Full-time positions are £26, gross) per annum. Part-time positions (12.5 hours) are £8,755 (gross) per annum. Salaries are reviewed annually on September 1.
* Working Hours: We have both full-time (37.5 hours per week) and part-time (12.5 hours per week) contracts available. Full-time contracts will work a mixture of mornings, evenings, and weekends across a 5-in-7 day schedule. Part-time contracts are predominantly evening and weekend shifts.
* Training: All staff are required to attend mandatory monthly two-hour pool training sessions to maintain their competency and compliance as lifeguards. We also offer the opportunity to attain desirable qualifications while working at the college.

Situated in Hampshire, Winchester College is an independent, secondary school for pupils aged between 13 and 18. The school was founded in 1382 by the Bishop of Winchester, William of Wykeham. It was expanded in the 19th Century to accommodate the popular demand in the local society. At the moment, there are over 700 pupils enrolled at the boarding school.
