Job overview
This role is working within JPP Consulting Ltd who provide a design and detailing service for a wide range of clients and schemes both locally and nationally. Our diverse portfolio includes multi-storey residential blocks, new housing schemes, schools and commercial developments ranging from small individual projects up to multi-million-pound schemes.
Responsibilities and duties
Working within the civils team of Senior Engineers, Engineers and Technicians, the role will be varied and include but is not limited to:
· Lead design projects: Take the lead in the design and delivery of civil engineering schemes from initial concept to detailed design, including roads, drainage, earthworks, and other infrastructure elements. Ensure designs are technically compliant with relevant regulations, standards and best practice. Ensure designs are cost effective and meet client requirements.
· Project management: Manage the technical aspects of multiple projects, overseeing the planning and delivery of designs. Work with senior management to ensure projects are completed within scope, on time and to budget. Maintain regular communication with clients and other stakeholders.
· Team leadership and mentoring: Lead, mentor and motivate a team of engineers and technicians, providing guidance on technical issues and ensuring the quality of work produced to the required standards. Review and approve design drawings and documentation prepared by team members. Partake in internal peer reviews and pro-actively encourage knowledge dissemination within the company.
· Technical expertise: Provide technical input and expertise on civil engineering challenges, offering innovative and cost-saving solutions. Ensure designs are technically sound and optimised for efficiency and sustainability.
· Client liaison: Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs and expectations are met. Provide regular updates on project progress and attend meetings as required. Assist in the preparation of client reports, presentations and proposals with regard to key issues on technical matters, as well as programme, contractual and commercial matters, with support from senior leadership.
· Quality assurance: Oversee the quality assurance process, ensuring that designs meet the required specifications, are cost-effective, and comply with industry standards. Conduct thorough checks and reviews of design work to ensure accuracy and technical integrity. Coordinate with colleagues across other offices to ensure consistent standards are provided.
· Site visits: Undertake site visits as necessary to monitor process and carry out surveys to obtain site information for design. Resolve designs issues on-site, and ensure works are being implemented in line with design specifications.
· Health and safety: Ensure that all designs are compliant with health and safety regulations and best practice. Ensure that risks are properly assessed and contribute to the development of risk assessment.
· Sustainability and innovation: Promote the use of sustainable design principles and materials, ensuring that projects minimise environmental impact while maintaining functionality and performance. Keep up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices.
· Business development: Support business development activities by contributing to fee proposals and project tenders. Assist in identifying new opportunities for the company and contribute to securing new projects. If required by senior leadership, manage and maintain a company cost centre, responsible for invoicing clients and managing multiple project budgets.
· Continuous learning: Proactively participate in professional development and training opportunities to enhance technical skills, industry knowledge and understanding of role.
Experience & Attributes
· Good experience and understanding of highway and drainage design.
· Very familiar with S104, S38, S278 sectional agreements.
· Strong IT knowledge and skills.
· Have sound technical abilities and confidence, whilst knowing self-limitations.
· Understand and confidently use a number of civil engineering design software packages independently. These would ideally include Causeway PDS, MicroDrainage, AutoCAD or similar.
· Must have strong communication skills, being confident to liaise with clients, local authorities, water companies, contractors and colleagues alike.
· Be able to motivate and inspire staff within their team and around them.
· Must be pro-active in self-directed CPD and keep up to date with appropriate standards and regulatory legislation, as well as developing staff within their team.
· Must hold a full clean driving licence.
· Must be prepared to travel UK wide and stay away from home on occasion.
