Our Electrical Power & Cooling Engineers are crucial in keeping BT’s networks operating 24/7, 365 days a year. They utilize their expertise in Low and High Voltage systems, generators, emergency lighting, cooling, alarms, and UPS systems to ensure the BT estate functions under all circumstances. They work in various environments, including exchange buildings, radio sites, rooftops, and outdoors, supporting electrical power systems and cooling equipment to keep the UK’s internet running. They are vital in meeting strict SLAs, taking ownership of their patches, and coaching colleagues.
A comprehensive technical training pathway will be provided, covering maintenance activities through face-to-face, virtual, internal, and external methods, potentially involving overnight stays and travel.
The role requires contributing to out-of-hours callouts via a Formal On Call Framework (typically 1 in 4 attendance, subject to local nuances) to support 24x7 service. This will be arranged upon completion of training.
A full UK manual driver’s license is required.
Key Purpose of the Role
Leading by example within Network Engineering, sharing knowledge, supporting new team members, and embodying BT values. Responsibilities include:
* Proactively reporting HSE, compliance, and design issues.
* Owning designated patches and sites to meet team objectives.
* Sharing best practices and supporting colleagues.
* Managing critical network repair, provision, and maintenance activities.
* Coordinating work with patch managers and senior colleagues.
* Conducting risk assessments for health and safety.
* Raising issues or risks for escalation.
* Enhancing personal skills to support team work.
* Proposing process improvements.
* Monitoring and ensuring compliance, including health surveillance; always maintaining a professional appearance with corporate clothing.
What You'll Bring
Physical ability to perform tasks such as bending, stretching, kneeling, crouching, climbing, working at various heights, lifting heavy objects, and recognizing colored wiring.
Mandatory qualifications:
* Electrical competency (City & Guilds 2360 parts 1+2, NVQ, or equivalent)
* BTEC Electrical Engineering Level 3 / HNC / HND / MOET Level 3 / ET Level 3 or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
* 18th Edition Regulations or current electrical standards
* Inspection, Testing and Verification (C&G 2392-10)
* Experience with UPS systems
* F-GAS Category 1
* Experience repairing and maintaining air conditioning split systems
* Experience with DC power systems
* Coaching, mentoring, or supervisory experience
* Qualified vocational certifications may change over time; ongoing assessment and training are expected.
Individuals are expected to be sufficiently experienced in these areas after some time in the role. Experienced hires will undergo internal assessments, while trainees will be trained to meet all criteria within their training period. A Full UK manual Driving Licence is required.
