Main duties of the job
The job description and person specification included in this Job Advert are generic descriptions for individuals operating at this level in these types of roles. The focus of this role will include:
1. providing an expert communications and engagement service to meaningfully engage with internal and external stakeholders
2. leading and implementing campaigns using digital and non-digital channels to reach targeted audiences
3. developing communications and involvement strategies and leading meaningful involvement activity, to seek comments on the development of Secure Data Environments and the use of data for research and non-research purposes
4. project managing communications and involvement activities that are targeted to reach under-served communities and address inequalities
5. producing engaging and high quality copy in a range of formats to help communicate the client’s priorities
6. providing support, coordination and delivery of public-facing events
Although dedicated to supporting the West Midlands SDE, the post holder may be required to cover other work delivered through the Insights, Engagement and Consultation (IEC) team and will have links to a larger MLCSU Communications and Engagement service through their line management.
The post holder will be someone with drive, ambition and creativity, able to work in a fast-paced environment to assist in delivering our client’s priorities.

This is an exciting opportunity to become a senior member of the team supporting the development and delivery of the West Midlands SDE
The role will currently be undertaken by working from home. hours per week, but applicants should be able to work within the offices in the West Midlands region and support events/meetings in the area (Birmingham and Solihull, Black Country, Coventry and Warwickshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent) as required.
The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective communications and engagement service, supporting managers and staff for the clients.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
7. Strategy and plan – Contributing or leading on researching, creating, writing and delivering communications and engagement plans for clients in agreement with them about how this is done
8. Monitor, measure, manage and report resources leading projects and campaigns, ensuring delivery to time, cost, timescales and quality standards
9. Advising, counselling and issue busting operational issues with communications and engagement activity in collaboration with place-based and at scale specialist team colleagues
10. System - working together as a cohort of programme-based teams, a key role is also working as a virtual group to share knowledge and expertise so that an efficient and effective service is delivered
11. Media relations – working closely with the communications and media/consultancy team, build local media relationships, monitor stories and trends and integrate this knowledge with wider system news to provide a seamless and whole picture for their clients.
12. Public affairs/stakeholder relations – supported by colleagues in the communications and media/consultancy team, help orchestrate and facilitate local briefings with stakeholders in writing, meetings and presentations. The communications and media/consultancy team will help ensure that this is not done in isolation but joined up to the wider system agenda and that risks are minimised.
13. Internal communications – responsible for providing clients with excellent internal communications, advising managers and board members on techniques to deliver a top performing campaign and PPIE service.
14. Public and patient information – responsible for ensuring that up to date information is available for their client by creating a good information framework so that there is shared ownership for updating client websites and providing easily understood information for patients and the public.
15. Corporate identity – support client’s to comply with their programme brand.
16. Engagement – advise the clients on their duty to involve and related best practice in involving, engaging and consulting patients and the public in light of proposed service change.
17. Team working – expected to work collaboratively with a solutions-focus with colleagues in programme and at scale teams.
