Job summary


Are you interested in earning a wage whilst training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification to become a Pharmacy Technician? Would you like the chance to become a Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT) in the pharmacy department at St Marys Community Health Campus in Portsmouth?

You need a min 4 GCSEs or equiv. at Grade C/4 or above, which must include Maths, English Language and at least ONE Science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Certificates must be provided prior to interview. You must also meet the eligibility criteria for Apprenticeships. Find out more about the role of the Pharmacy Technician here:

Full educational support is provided, but you will need to be able to learn quickly new IT systems and embrace new technology to provide safe and effective care to patients in a variety of environments. You will need to be highly committed to achieve the qualification as it requires participation and completion of a vigorous training and competency programme. You will need to demonstrate excellent work/life/study balance skills and be very self-motivated.

Trainees who successfully complete the training programme, complete an e-portfolio and the end point assessment (EPA) will be eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council and practice as a registered Pharmacy Technician.


Main duties, tasks & skills required


This is a 27-month fixed term rotational training post which, after completing the apprenticeship, will enable the postholder to register as a pharmacy technician with the GPhC. The postholder will perform general pharmaceutical duties under the control and supervision of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician and undertake to complete virtual guided learning provided by the training provider as well as workplace training. The postholder will train and develop the skills to become an Accuracy Checking

Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and demonstrate commitment to undertake L3 apprenticeship within an agreed timetable. A pre-registration pharmacy technician works at all times under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist. A rotational scheme is in operation covering the main dispensary, clozapine dispensary, distribution, clinical trials and medicines management both on site and at other Trust locations.

Four days each week will be spent gaining vocational experience and completing competencies required to complete the Level 3 diploma. One day per week will be spent studying the knowledge required to underpin the diploma. Your training will involve working with an educational supervisor to develop a work-based portfolio, undertaking work-based assessments and completing all assignments/projects.

Job description


Key Activities / Responsibilities

* Follow all standard operating procedures and achieve and maintain all inhouse competencies and demonstrate the maintaining of accuracy to HIOW Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust standards in all appropriate areas.
* Accurately dispense and produce labels for prescriptions and controlled drugs for both in and outpatients of the hospital and associate peripheral units. Meet legal and professional requirements and standards of the GPhC and agreed Trust timeframes.
* Complete the relevant dispensed item checking competencies within the apprenticeship programme, including final accuracy checking of prescriptions
* Tailor individual supplies for patients to assist concordance and increase patient safety.
* Check in and correctly store medicinal items. Supply stock items to wards and departments and community clinics on requisition. Maintain stock on shelves in Pharmacy areas and take part in stock cupboard top-up services on wards, to maintain supply for patients.
* Obtain and record information for medicines reconciliation, liaise with other professionals where required and provide a medicines management service on wards taking responsibility for an allocated ward, completing the medicines management process professionally accurately and responsibly.
* Assist in providing a clinical trial service.
* Take corrective action in the event of a near miss or deviation within the limits of responsibility.
* Understand how to report adverse clinical incidents through the Trust risk management system and suggest preventative or corrective actions(s) to improve safety and efficiency of overall service.
* Demonstrate throughout all rotations consistently meeting the required standard as set out in the PRTPT Professional Standards of GPhC.
* Participate in section meetings and feedback information or suggestions for improvement in line with local policies and procedures and keep up to date with current pharmaceutical, scientific and technical developments.
* Assist the EPMA Pharmacy team dealing with queries from healthcare professionals for electronic prescribing.
* Liaise with other health care professionals regarding difficulties in supplying medicines in order to ensure appropriate patients care is maintained at all

times.

* Counsel outpatients about how to use their medicines and give general information and advice about medicines.
* Train in the monitoring requirements and supply of clozapine.

Qualifications



Essential


5 GCSEs grade C or above (4-9) or equivalent including English, Maths and Science

Able to commit to a two year apprenticeship programme and completion of End Point Assessments


Desirable


Level 2 NVQ certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills or other GPhC qualification

but should qualify as Level 3 Pharmacy Technician at the end of the apprenticeship

A levels or further education
