Locum Consultant in General Paediatrics with interest in Nephrology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and dynamic individual to apply for the post of Locum Consultant in Acute and General Paediatrics with an interest in Nephrology.
The post offers the opportunity to contribute to a large and well‑established paediatric service, supporting both acute general paediatric care and specialist nephrology services within a multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will join the Paediatric Consultant team providing secondary and tertiary level paediatric services to children in Leicester. The post holder will be part of the general paediatric team but will play an important role in the Paediatric Nephrology services provided at University Hospitals of Leicester in conjunction with the East Midlands and South Yorkshire (EMEESY) renal network based at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
The EMEESY Children’s Kidney Network delivers specialist nephrology and urology care to children and young people with kidney problems throughout the East Midlands, the East of England and South Yorkshire. Highly specialised care such as dialysis, transplant and renal biopsies are performed in Nottingham to maintain expertise.
The post holder will supervise the inpatient care of renal patients with input from the ward team and Consultant of the Week, and will link with relevant local services such as urology, antenatal counselling, cardiology, and PICU as needed.
Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date have a certificate of completion of specialist training. The successful appointee will participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and clinical audit, undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team.
Job responsibilities
* Participate in consultant cover and service provision for the General Paediatric Service including the Consultant of the week daytime rota.
* Participate in consultant cover and service provision for the Paediatric Nephrology Service including ward cover as needed.
* Provide 24‑7 out‑of‑hours cover for the Children’s Hospital as part of the General Paediatric Consultant on‑call service.
* Promote and strengthen links with Primary Care colleagues, including GPs and AHPs.
* Maintain the highest clinical standards in patient management.
* Share responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of patients.
* Work closely with the general paediatric team, relevant Heads of Service and General Managers.
* Promote new ways of working and coordination of patient care in the community, ensuring services are based on effective and integrated partnerships.
* Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
* Supervise and train junior medical staff and appraise the performance of juniors.
* Teach, conduct research and participate in administration.
* Develop the service proactively and contribute to clinical governance and audit.
Qualifications and Training
* MBBS or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration.
* Fully accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date.
* MRCPCH or equivalent.
* Child Protection Level 3.
* APLS.
* Membership of relevant specialist societies or associations.
* Higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD) or equivalent.
Experience & Skills
* Comprehensive clinical knowledge and sound judgment in paediatric nephrology.
* Willingness to develop skills and experience in related areas.
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
* Special interest in leading intestinal failure service.
Management
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors.
* Experience of leading teams and understanding different leadership styles.
* Ability to organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
* Understanding of the wider health agenda and modern NHS.
