Senior Biomedical Scientist – Blood Transfusion

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientists for the role of Senior Biomedical Scientist within the Transfusion Laboratories at University Hospitals Dorset.
* Help manage and co‑coordinate the day‑to‑day technical activities of the Transfusion Department, prioritising work so that a safe and timely service is available and meets patients’ needs.
* Extensive experience in Transfusion at a specialist level.
* Motivated and able to lead colleagues.
* Prioritise and organise own workload and possess excellent communication skills.
* Professional and personal development is encouraged and supported by the department.
* Knowledge of BSQR, GPG and transfusion‑related guidelines would be advantageous.
Please note this is a cross‑site working role. Working location will be based on department priorities, so flexibility is essential.
Applications from candidates who are currently enrolled on a suitable MSc programme (or equivalent) will be considered.
This role requires HCPC Registration.
Location
Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital
Work cross‑site at both Poole and Bournemouth.
Main duties of the job
* Coordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens; allocate work to other BMS and MLA staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
* Ensure appropriate requested investigations are performed and components supplied in a timely manner for each sample.
* Handle specialised and urgent specimens appropriately.
* Participate in technical work as required.
* Ensure appropriate maintenance and safe use of equipment.
* Assist in developing rotas with other senior biomedical staff and ensure continuous cover.
* Co‑ordinate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and manage stock control.
* Contribute to audit activities.
* Assist in maintaining and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications
* Registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Transfusion MSc, Biomedical Science MSc with Transfusion, IBMS HSD in Transfusion Science or equivalent.
* Willing to pursue further qualifications.
* BBTS Specialist Certificate.
Experience
* At least 3 years post‑HCPC Registration experience in a Haematology, Coagulation or Transfusion laboratory.
* Continuing learning through academic or practical experience.
* Evidence of developing staff through teaching, training and delegation.
* Experience working out of hours.
* Supervisory experience.
* Highly developed technical skills across laboratory procedures.
* Ability to interpret diagnostic results and take appropriate action.
* Proven training ability.
* Organise own workload and day‑to‑day staffing of work section.
* Evaluate and appraise new methods and technologies.
* Previous experience with analyser and process validation and verification.
* Prepare presentations as part of laboratory training programme.
Knowledge
* Thorough specialist understanding of Transfusion Medicine.
* Understanding of Transfusion and its application in clinical practice and public health.
* Comprehensive understanding of quality control/quality assurance and laboratory safety procedures.
* Understanding of basic management practice.
* Understanding of Good Practice Guidelines for blood establishments and hospital blood banks.

* Willing to work flexibly.
* Capability to work alone to provide out‑of‑hours service.
Other requirements specific to the role
* Ability to relocate to the area.
Language requirement
