Lead Engineer 2 – Mechanical Engineering (GE Vernova)
As a Mechanical Design Leader, you will report to the HVDC Valve Engineering Global Leader within the Product Delivery Group (PDG) of Grid Systems Integration (GSI) in GE Vernova.
The purpose of the role is to ensure the highest levels of engineering information is available. From the development of standards, processes, tools through to the implementation of lessons learned this role covers the lifespan of all mechanical elements of the HVDC Valve.
The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
Responsibilities
* Lead the Mechanical Design Engineering team to deliver the requirements across tendering, R&D and Project deliverables. This includes drawings, standard material lists and process documents.
* Ensure the highest levels of safety can be achieved during all elements of build, testing or installation works and that the application of this is within our documentation.
* Reflect the relevant international mechanical design standards within our documentation ensuring at all times GE remains compliant to the requirements.
* Train, coach and develop individuals in all locations to ensure understanding of the tools, processes and requirements. Proactively develop the competency of the team.
* Hire and develop talent. Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development. Utilizes in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy/strategy.
* Use your judgment and abilities to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety. Use technical experience and analytical thinking. Use multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
* Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements. Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within the field. Conveys performance expectations and handles sensitive issues.
Candidate Profile
The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in mechanical engineering. However, this is not as important as a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role.
Candidates should have proven experience of the mechanical design and/or development of HVDC Valves. A good understanding of the mechanical related elements associated with the design, manufacture and installation of HVDC Valves.
Required Characteristics
* Conceptual or theoretical activities related to the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of such systems.
* Competent in CREO / CAD software or similar. Able to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation.
* Knowledge of Mechanical installation of large equipment (valve halls).
* Familiarity with materials used in high‑voltage environments.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Knowledge of relevant IEC, IEEE, or CIGRÉ standards for HVDC systems and mechanical design codes (e.g., ASME, ISO).
* Knowledge of document control methodologies and systems.
* EHS compliance ability – good strong knowledge of safety and the environment.
* Good communication skills and ability to coordinate and lead a small group of engineers.
Desired Characteristics
* Prior experience of electrical transmission industry.
* Able to work to deadlines with high quality.
* High attention to detail.
* Has been involved in continuous improvement / LEAN activities.
