Band 6 - Community Midwife, Lavender Team/Perinatal Mental Health

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Midwife, with a strong commitment to supporting vulnerable women and their families and a special interest in perinatal mental health, to join a well‑established team of midwives at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

This post is full‑time community hours schedule including weekend work and on‑call commitment.


Main duties of the job

The Lavender Team provides a traditional model of midwifery care (antenatal and postnatal continuity) to vulnerable pregnant women including teenagers, women with learning disabilities, victims of domestic abuse, women experiencing severe mental health issues, and women with complex safeguarding issues.

You will provide antenatal and postnatal care in hospital / community clinics and women's homes and will be required to participate in the community on‑call service to support women birthing at home and the trust escalation process.

You will provide a full range of health education, social care and advice to women, liaising with multi‑disciplinary/agency groups to continually improve maternity care for women and their families. You will be responsive to the needs of the women and obtain user views as appropriate.

Job responsibilities

You will be required to support student midwives and junior members of staff as we guide and encourage them through their professional development.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and compassionate midwife who wishes to extend their midwifery skills in this field. You must have excellent communication and time management skills and be an initiative‑taking team player.

It is vital that you have a special interest in caring for vulnerable women and a good understanding of maternity safeguarding and a basic knowledge of perinatal mental health. You will be supported in enhancing these skills by the Lavender and Perinatal Mental Health team leaders.


Person Specification


Education

* Evidence of continued professional development and its application


Knowledge

* Understanding of the role of the midwife as defined by the NMC and The Code
* Understanding of perinatal mental health and its impact on families that you care for


Experience

* Experience of working in all areas of midwifery, including intrapartum experience and completion of preceptorship
* Awareness of current national midwifery initiatives
* Safeguarding and complex social care experience
* Experience of supporting women with mental issues in pregnancy


Skills

* Ability to understand and interpret fetal wellbeing.
* Demonstrates understanding of role boundaries and be able to recognise when to elevate
* Audit experience understanding of the process and its value
