Software Development Manager
Location: Kingston upon Hull, England. Headquarters in Kirmington, North Lincolnshire, with additional offices in Hull and East Yorkshire. Hybrid working available.
Responsibilities
* Lead, manage and be accountable for the Development Team (Software Developers and QA).
* Oversee all development project timelines, ensuring deliverables are completed on time.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to align development efforts with business objectives.
* Ensure Software Developers are working to industry best practices and coding standards.
* Mentor and support team members in their professional growth and development.
* Monitor and report on team performance and project progress to senior management.
* Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, technologies and identify areas for improvement/training requirements.
* Manage the full software development lifecycle, ensuring structured delivery and quality outcomes.
* Support with writing technical specifications for new product features.
* Assist with discovery for tools, features, or policy changes that could improve team performance or product capability.
* Carry out any other duties required by senior management appropriate to the Software Development Manager role.
Hands‑On Technical Leadership
* Contribute directly to development projects where required, providing technical leadership by example.
* Conduct and participate in code reviews to maintain high standards of quality, performance, and security.
* Support the implementation of full‑stack solutions including front‑end, back‑end, and database components.
* Troubleshoot complex technical challenges and guide the team toward effective, scalable solutions.
* Ensure smooth integration between systems and services across the product architecture.
Experience, Qualifications and Skills
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline (minimum 2:1) ESSENTIAL
* Recognised management qualification (CMI Level 5 or above) PREFERRED (if no formal management qualifications, must be willing to work towards it)
* Minimum 2 years’ demonstrable management experience independently leading a software development team ESSENTIAL
* Strong technical background with hands‑on full‑stack development experience ESSENTIAL
* Experience developing and deploying applications on AWS
* Familiarity with database design and integration (SQL or NoSQL)
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and automated testing frameworks
* Knowledge of AI development or machine learning would be an advantage
* Strong understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, etc.)
* Excellent problem‑solving, debugging, and technical troubleshooting skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
* Proven ability to lead and mentor developers and oversee multiple concurrent projects
* Strong organisational, prioritisation, and time‑management skills
