Consultant in Stroke Medicine

Job Summary

We welcome applicants from consultants with experience in Stroke Medicine, either from a GIM, Stroke or Neurology background.
The successful candidate will work closely with the existing team of consultants to contribute to improving our stroke pathways and SSNAP performance, ensuring a first‑class service where patients and their relatives come first.
Location
The Stroke/Neurology team is located in the Betjeman Centre on the ground floor of GWH, home to the department’s outpatient clinic rooms, day hospital, therapy centre and office space for the consultant team and supporting staff. A separate rehabilitation building, managed by SWICC, is also on site.
Responsibilities
* Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions and provide evidence‑based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Continuously oversee the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care, with secretarial support.
* Develop subspecialty interests that align with the division’s needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
* Teach and examine trainees, and contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activities.
* Provide cover for consultant colleagues during leave in accordance with agreed arrangements.
* Participate in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
* Respond to emergencies and unforeseen circumstances with suitable duties.
* Participate in an out‑of‑hours consultant rota, detailed in the job plan.
* Perform any additional responsibilities as outlined in the job plan and service needs.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
* Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
* Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, aligned with the Trust’s business plans.
* Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the division and support the Divisional Director to achieve objectives.
* Work in partnership with colleagues in other divisions within the Trust.
* Assist in the cost‑effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non‑pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.
* Operate within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders and financial procedures.
* Supervise junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust‑wide teaching programmes.
* Investigate incidents, write reports, and participate in clinical risk management.
* Embodiment of the STAR values and utilisation of NHS Constitution principles to guide decisions.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Fully registered with the GMC.
Essential Experience
* Clinical training/experience equivalent to UK CCT.
* Expertise in all aspects of stroke medicine.
Teaching & Research
* Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multidisciplinary teams.
* Demonstrable multidisciplinary team leadership skills.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
