Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Stroke)

This role will primarily involve assessment and management for our Stroke HASU and ASU patients. We provide a weekly videofluoroscopy clinic and access to FEES as needed. We are involved in the PHEAST trial, and you will be trained in related research elements.
Responsibilities include:
* Providing highly specialist assessment, therapy and advice to patients with communication and swallowing disorders in the stroke ward.
* Supporting the general acute ward during times of reduced capacity with prioritisation of stroke caseload.
* Co‑ordinating SLT intervention across the service in the absence of a senior staff member.
* Providing specialist knowledge, advice, training and teaching to carers, students, SLT team, medical staff and MDT members.
* Supporting junior staff within the acute SLT service.
* Developing therapy care plans for assistants while retaining overall responsibility.
* Preparing written reports and liaising with medical staff, families and voluntary organisations.
Qualifications:
* HCPC accreditation/registration.
* Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent.
* Minimum 5 GCSEs or equivalent literacy and numeracy.
* Informal qualifications from in‑service training, short courses and work experience.
Clinical skills:
* Minimum 1 year of experience managing a CVA caseload.
* Experience in tracheostomy management.
Knowledge & Experience:
* Extensive experience with adults, preferably post‑CVA, who have speech, language and communication needs.
* Ability to construct clear care plans, differentiating appropriate therapy options based on assessment, theoretical knowledge and clinical benchmarking.
* Ability to make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, with supervisory input.
* Experience in the management of patients with tracheostomy tubes.
Personal and People Development:
* Willingness to support student SALTs, SALTAs and volunteers for their development.
* Active interest in CPD in line with RCSLT guidelines within a clinical specialism (minimum 1 year).
