Job Summary
This vacancy is open to the Cornwall Healthcare community only. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to work at The Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro. The successful candidate will be part of a SLT team in the acute hospital, seeing a range of adult patients presenting with communication and swallowing difficulties.
This post offers potential opportunities for regular CPD development, NQP and dysphagia competencies, development of specialist skills in video‑fluoroscopy, tracheostomy care, and experience working with complex acute patient presentations. It is open to those who are newly qualified or soon to be registered.
Responsibilities
* Provide an adult SLT service for patients on General Acute wards across the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust sites, including RCHT Treliske and West Cornwall Hospital.
* Jointly manage a caseload of patients in conjunction with the Acute and General Ward SLT Teams, using evidence‑based practice.
* Assess, diagnose and treat adult acute admission patients presenting with swallowing difficulties and communication difficulties, within the scope of own competence.
* Plan, implement, evaluate and review interventions, with support from senior staff as needed.
* Liaise with multidisciplinary teams and relevant care professionals and agencies.
* Work under the supervision of the SLT Team Lead and Specialist SLTs.
* May become part of the developing Speech and Language Therapy rotation scheme, which spans across different SLT settings and areas of practice across Cornwall.
Qualifications and Registered Status
* Degree or equivalent recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
* Registered with HCPC.
* Professional qualification in the English language or IELTS evidence.
* Desirable: Member of RCSLT; Dysphagia qualification or evidence of RCSLT dysphagia competencies commenced.

* Knowledge of a range of assessments and interventions.
* Ability to work in teams and recognise own wellbeing needs.
* Computer literate with well‑developed communication skills, including empathy, negotiation and motivation.
* Presentation skills and reflective practice.
* Time management and application form interview management with support from a supervisor.
Experience
* Experience of working with adult patients during training or post‑qualification.
* Experience with adult patients who have acquired conditions during training or post‑qualification.
* Experience working independently during training.
* Experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Experience and Skills
* Experience of working with AAC.
* Experience with dysphagic clients.
* Experience in the acute setting.
* Experience of triaging / prioritisation.
Training and Development
* Demonstrable commitment to CPD.
* Evidence of self‑directed learning.
Employment Details
* Band 5 – Salary £31,049 to £37,796 a year (Agenda for Change).
* Contract: Permanent.
