Due to enabling flexible working for our colleagues, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our successful English team - be part of it!
This is a Fixed Term (1st September – 31 December), full-time post commencing next academic year. You will enjoy working in this supportive department where your continuing professional development will be championed.
Brimsham Green School was inspected by Ofsted in November 2024 and was judged to be maintaining the standards identified at the previous inspection in 2019, which were ‘Good’ in all areas. Ofsted noted that, “Staff are highly ambitious for all pupils at Brimsham Green School” and “curriculum design and delivery are strong.” Ofsted judged students’ behaviour to be good and that “the school’s recent deliberate focus on creating a sense of belonging is having an impact.” In summary, Ofsted found leaders to be, “…ethically driven…open, honest and meticulous when evaluating the school and making changes.”
•Do you passionately believe that all young people need to be exposed to diverse literary texts to navigate the world around them?
•Can you inspire students to read widely and for pleasure?
•Are you ambitious for yourself and students to excel?
If the answer to all three of these is 'yes' and you are a skilled teacher of English who is ambitious for every single child who enters your classroom, then please read on...
You will be joining a team of twelve other English teachers, with a high level of shared experience. The department is well led, and leadership is distributed between the Head of Department and two Key Stage Co-ordinators.
Continued learning of English at KS5 is strong, an indicator of the engagement in learning instilled in students throughout KS3 and KS4. ‘A’ Level English Language, English Literature and Film Studies are all studied.
At KS4, students study EDUQAS English Language and English Literature GCSEs. In addition, trips to the theatre and screenings of plays and performances enrich students’ understanding of their set texts at GCSE. For the last two years students have watched a live production of An Inspector Calls in the theatre.
The KS3 curriculum prepares our students for their further study of English by instilling a love of reading, writing and creative thinking, allowing them to form articulate ideas and express themselves knowledgeably. We encourage enquiring minds, and believe that a curriculum should challenge its audience as well as inform them on social, emotional and cultural issues. Through a range of diverse texts reflecting the diversity of identities, cultures and humanity’s experiences on a global scale, students reflect on, and develop respect for, people and places beyond the limits of their own realities.
The department is well-resourced, and students' independent learning is promoted. Students have access to online resources such as Tassomai. The curriculum is centralised, with resources pre-planned, but teachers are free to adapt lessons and learning to suit the needs of their classes and their individual styles. We value individual creativity amongst our teachers in the English department, whilst supporting them with their workload and fostering a consistent approach to our pedagogy which we continue to build as a team.
In return for your hard work, passion and commitment we offer:
•Bespoke CPD - we firmly believe 'better never stops';
•A supportive team of departmental colleagues who involve themselves fully in the pastoral and social life of the school;
•The opportunity to join a committed team of staff who believe that teaching is a great profession, and who challenge each other to excel.
Should you decide that you would like to join the staff team here at Brimsham, challenging and supporting our enthusiastic learners, then we look forward to reading your completed application form. Within your supporting statement, in the ‘Skills, abilities, knowledge, and experience’ section, please address the following points:
•How you use formative feedback in assessing students’ knowledge and understanding, and as a tool to provide the next steps for them to progress.
•How you facilitate active participation to support students in accessing the curriculum, and how you maximise the impact of this in lessons.
•The role you play, as a teacher, in facilitating students’ resilience and independence.
