University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to invite applications for a locum part-time Consultant Paediatric Neurologist to join the Paediatric Neurology team based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC).

The Paediatric Neurology (PN) service provides tertiary care for children with neurological conditions throughout the South West of England region, and secondary and tertiary care for children with neurological problems in Bristol. It is a large busy service with a wide catchment area, serving a total population of 5.6 million. Although based in Bristol, the service also provides peripheral outreach clinics on a regular basis to all the district general hospitals (DGH) within the region.

The paediatric neurology service is based entirely at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. (BRHC; part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust) It provides a tertiary level service for children who need neurological assessments, care and treatments namely spasticity and movement disorders assessment and management, neuromuscular services, evaluation by the epilepsy surgery service (CESS), neuro-rehabilitation and complex neuroimaging. The service is part of the W&C Health division and is embedded within other secondary and tertiary level services for children. The paediatric neurology service works closely with the paediatric neurosurgery service, providing medical input into all paediatric neurosurgical cases.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide neurology specialist service based on their previous experience and skills.

The post holder will work closely with neurosurgical colleagues, community and general paediatricians, allied health professionals and advanced nurse practitioners and other members of various multidisciplinary teams to ensure that a high quality complex neurology service is delivered.

Applicants are required to be on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register and have a CCT in Paediatric Neurology or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The post is based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC; part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust). The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside not more than 45 minutes travel by road from BRHC for on-call purposes. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

Person specification


Qualifications & Training

* MRCPCH or equivalent
* Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
* Must have CCT Paediatric Neurology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment.
* Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.
* Experience of audit projects
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
* Knowledge of political context within which we operate
* Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
* Completion of a general management course or programme
* Interest in medical management


Experience

* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Broad training in paediatric neurology


Clinical Governance and Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
* Positive approach to evidence based practice
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation


Research

* Evidence of an understanding of research principles and the role of research in PICU
* Commitment to involvement in Paediatric critical care based research projects
* Evidence of peer review research papers
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department
* Evidence of research papers published in peer reviewed journals
* Evidence of securing research grant funding
* Evidence of oral presentation at academic meetings


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching medical students
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Evidence of involvement in teaching and training
* Commitment to support education programme in PICM
* Commitment to simulation training
* Formal teaching qualification (Certificate/Diploma/Masters in Education)
* APLS / PALS instructor
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
* Ability to practice independently as a consultant
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures
* Evidence of leadership or management roles undertaken

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
