Childcare Support Worker Job Description
Responsible to: Centre Manager
Salary: Increments with service
Direct Reports: Senior Childcare Manager
Location: Birmingham
Work Pattern: Flexible circa 26 hours
Position: 1 (Monday-Friday 9:00am - 3:00pm or 10:00am start; hours flexible)
Job Purpose
To work as part of a team providing a confidential and supportive service, working closely with women and children living in our refuge due to domestic abuse. To support children and women in the nursery and afterschool club, fostering an environment where children can reach their potential.
Main Duties
1. Ensure women and children feel welcome and safe upon admission.
2. Provide a safe, caring, supportive, and stimulating environment for children to play and learn.
3. Provide nutritious snacks and lunches.
4. Plan, facilitate, and support structured activities during nursery and after school sessions.
5. Maintain records on children, including observations, assessments, and future planning.
6. Support children’s emotional and social development, encouraging understanding and positive self-concepts.
7. Organize and support children’s offsite activities and trips.
8. Report and record injuries, illnesses, or concerns to the Nursery Manager.
9. Organize and maintain toys and materials; ensure equipment is cleaned and faults are reported.
10. Discuss children’s developmental progress with mothers, colleagues, and professionals.
11. Promote equal opportunities, respecting individual needs related to race, ethnicity, religion, disability, and family structures.
12. Plan and facilitate cultural celebrations.
13. Ensure compliance with SEN Codes of Practice and related policies.
14. Manage challenging behavior positively, promoting development and self-esteem.
15. Liaise with mothers, staff, and professionals to ensure continuity of care.
16. Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries, safeguarding sensitive information.
17. Provide support, information, and advocacy to mothers and children.
18. Record information accurately and share relevant data following legislation.
19. Report Child Protection issues immediately per safeguarding policies.
20. Attend Child Protection conferences and related meetings.
21. Implement and adhere to Birmingham Crisis Centre and Nursery policies.
22. Participate in staff meetings, training, and open days.
23. Stay informed about childcare legislation and best practices.
24. Assist in preparations for Ofsted inspections.
25. Perform any other duties appropriate to the role.
