University Hospitals Sussex (Royal Sussex County Hospital & Princess Royal Hospital) is delighted to offer further fellow posts which will be available from August 2026 for 12 months
to undertake projects in perioperative care. These posts have been specifically designed to offer participation in major quality improvement and research within the department (details
below).
In addition, there will be opportunities for career development in a busy teaching hospital. The posts offer broad clinical experience alongside non-clinical projects. These will all contribute to the preparation for competitive ST4 application or CESR application. The roles would also be ideal for expansion of career portfolio ahead of
consultant applications.
Main duties of the job
Career development time (average 1-2 days per week). There are several exciting new opportunities to engage with the following projects, and specific involvement will be established following successful appointment. Each project will have a named consultant supervisor.
1. Prehabilitation/optimisation improvement project.
2. Hypothermia research project
3. Patient safety project
4. NELA project

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be joining a team of six tiers of anaesthetists across 2 sites
(RSCH and PRH). In addition, there will be off-site on call generalist consultant support, as
well as on call consultants for all the sub-specialties (neuro, cardiac and paediatrics). There is
a separate ICU on call team onsite. Flexibility will be required to participate in on call
rotas across both sites (RSCH and Princess Royal Hospital).
Training lists will be provided in a variety of anaesthetic specialties and at either hospital site;
a proportion of distantly supervised lists will be offered / expected according to competences
of the post holder and departmental need.
The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and
unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation,
where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed
between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses
that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not
be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Experience/Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Basic medical degree
2. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
3. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Desirable criteria
4. Higher Degree
5. Post graduate qualifications eg MRCP
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
6. Minimum 3 years anaesthetic experience and clinical skills expected for CT3 +
7. Completed RCoA Stage 1 training or equivalent
8. Initial assessment of competencies in obstetrics (3 months)
9. Minimum 3 months ICU experience
Desirable criteria
10. Prior anaesthetic post within the U.K.
11. Ability to work independently with distant supervision on the labour ward.
