Paediatric Sister / Charge Nurse

We are offering part-time opportunities for a Junior Band 6 Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse who is eager to develop their clinical and leadership skills within a dynamic Paediatric Emergency Department. The department is a busy working environment looking after children with acute illness and injuries.

A bespoke training package and ongoing educational development is available.

You will be part of a team who are dedicated to enhancing and delivering a high standard of care.


Main duties of the job

Clinical Care:

* Provides skilled nursing care to children and young people with a variety of acute and emergency presentations.
* Conducts triage, assessments, and initiates appropriate treatment plans.
* Recognises and manages deteriorating patients, escalating concerns appropriately.
* Administers medications safely, following hospital guidelines.
* Supports junior nurses, student nurses, and healthcare assistants through supervision, teaching, and mentorship.
* Acts as a shift leader when required, ensuring safe staffing levels and effective patient flow.
* Works collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, including doctors, advanced practitioners, and allied health professionals.

Communication & Teamwork:

* Maintains clear, accurate documentation and effective handovers.
* Communicates sensitively with children, families, and carers, providing reassurance and support.
* Advocates for patients and ensures safeguarding concerns are appropriately managed.

Professional Development & Governance:

* Participates in training, audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.
* Maintains up-to-date clinical skills and mandatory training.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield, and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community-based settings and care in patients' homes.

From April 9th, 2025 - Healthcare assistants - You must have a minimum of two years of experience working within the NHS as a HCA for the Trust to consider sponsorship (we will only consider sponsorship if you meet this criteria and have a current visa expiring within 3 months).


Job responsibilities

* Carry out duties in keeping with NMC Code of Conduct and ensure other members of nursing staff practice within said code.
* Set and monitor standards of quality nursing care over a 24-hour period by co-coordinating the care given by nurses, medical staff, and social workers, alongside any other professionals directly involved in patient care on the department.
* Supervise the delivery of quality nursing care. Praise and correct team members as appropriate, and be involved in personal development of the workforce using KSF/performance review.
* Ensure resources are appropriately utilized to maximum effectiveness against workload and activity of the Accident & Emergency Department.
* Actively contribute to the attainment of national targets in relation to paediatric emergency care, including the four-hour standard and ambulance handover standard.
* Utilize all available resources to ensure patient flow through the Emergency Department. Where flow is compromised, escalate any barriers through the line management or command and control structure as deemed appropriate.
* Respond actively to changes in the Trust Opel level. Carry out actions in the clinical escalation plan and support the nursing and medical teams in carrying out aforementioned plans.
* Responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of staff, patients, and visitors under his/her control, as far as is reasonably practicable and in compliance with statutory duty, e.g., COSHH and Manual Handling of Loads. This includes providing systems of work, work environment, and equipment that are safe and without health risks.
* Report on levels of nursing care quality to nurse management.
* Ensure sufficient information is available for relatives and patients, both written and verbal, and provide access to further information as required.
* Promote and maintain a culture of incident reporting by patients & staff in accordance with trust guidelines.
* Work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of care to ED patients.
* Identify safeguarding concerns and act on them.

Special Requirements

* Relevant experience as a band 5 staff nurse with experience of a Paediatric Emergency Department.

* Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients in the Emergency Department.
* Mental Health Training.


Qualifications

* Registered Paediatric Nurse.
* PILS.
* NLS.
* EPALS.
* Plaster Training.
* Venepuncture & Cannulation Training.
* Assessor Training.
