About the Service
Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) provide pathology services to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), George Elliot NHS Trust (GEH), and South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT). The Histopathology Department, based at UHCW and SWFT sites, employs over 120 staff and delivers dissection, microtomy, molecular and immunohistochemistry services. Sub‑specialities include Breast, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Colorectal and Respiratory among and mortuary services are provided across both sites.
Role Overview
As departmental Quality Lead and Section Manager, you will coordinate ISO15189 accreditation, ensure compliance with HTA guidelines, drive quality improvement initiatives and support the Section Manager (Senior BMS) team.
Responsibilities
* Co‑ordinate quality assurance schemes and supervise compliance with departmental audit schedules.
* Maintain all laboratory aspects of ISO standards, HTA regulations and other statutory regulations, and manage the development and maintenance of controlled documentation.
* Lead departmental meetings, collate data and implement service changes where necessary.
* Manage KPIs, including turnaround times, staff attendance, PDR, and mandatory training compliance.
* Oversee the implementation of new techniques, equipment and working practices, supporting change processes.
* Support and delegate to the Pathology Department Manager when required, and plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate the pathology service.
* Provide specialist support to staff for troubleshooting, equipment maintenance and ensuring accuracy and precision of results.
* Manage and maintain stocks of materials, reagents and consumables, ensuring cost efficiency.
* Handle complex enquiries, record information and complete follow‑up reports.
Qualifications
* Completion of an IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) is required.
* Completion of a Level 7 qualification (MSc IBMS HSD or equivalent) is essential; candidates working towards this may be considered for a Trainee Section Manager role on Band 6.
* Strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems, ISO/CPA, MHRA and HTA regulations.
* Experience in managing audit schedules, KPIs, and quality improvement projects.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to work autonomously and within a team.
