Job Summary

Undercliffe Surgery are looking for a highly motivated General Practitioner to join our team on a fixed term for 12 months to provide maternity cover from May 2026. The ideal candidate will deliver 4 sessions per week over 2 days, Monday and Tuesday.


About Us

We are a patient centred practice in the heart of Heckmondwike with a list size of around 10,700 patients. We are a GP training practice with an excellent supportive team of 2 GP Partners, 5 Salaried GP’s and an advanced Practitioner. We also have a Nursing team consisting of 2 Practice Nurses, 2 Trainee Nursing associates and 2 Healthcare Assistants along with administrative and managerial staff providing a high quality of care to our patients.

We work closely with our neighbouring practices in the area within our PCN, Spen Health and Wellbeing primary care network to provide a high level of care to our patients and access to services within the community.

Job Description


Clinical Responsibilities

* Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self‑referenced or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
* Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
* Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* In consultation with patients and in line with current Practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health.
* Providing counselling and health education.
* Referring to other care providers as appropriate.
* Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
* Delivering enhanced services.
* Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand‑written prescriptions whenever possible).
* Prescribing in accordance with the Practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
* Undertaking all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.


Other Responsibilities within the Organisation

* Awareness of and compliance with all relevant Practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety.
* A commitment to life‑long learning and audit to ensure evidence‑based best practice.
* Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
* Contributing to the development of computer‑based patient records and summarising patient records and Read‑Coding patient data.
* Attending training and events organised by the Practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with or allow us to gather sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.

* The post holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers, as well as information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

Person Specification


Essential

* Committed to working as part of a multi‑disciplinary, multi‑agency Primary Care team.
* Openness to explore alternative working practices.
* Experience of working as a GP in a primary care / community setting.
* MBBS or equivalent.
* MRCGP.
* Full registration with GMC.
* Certification of completion of training (JCPTGP/PMETB).
* Inclusion on the performers list.
* DBS checked.
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both written and verbally.
* Good organisational skills.
* Time management skills.
* Able to work under pressure.
* Working on own initiative.
* IT skills (including word processing and database work) as relevant to General Practice.
* Committed to quality and patient satisfaction.
* Committed to equal opportunities.
* Team work.
* Understanding the role of medical services in wider public health agenda.
* Understanding current NHS policies.


Desirable

* Knowledge of the demographic characteristics that affect health and healthcare in the area.
