Job Overview

This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.

Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.


Responsibilities

* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water‑management and flood‑defence structures and monitoring sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role and be available during normal working hours or out of hours.
* Provide technical engineering leadership and support across mechanical, electrical and control‑system activities.
* Draft and publish electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Support the application of risk‑based approaches to electrical maintenance philosophies, including Failure Mode Effects Analysis and reliability systems.


Experience and Skills

* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including the application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.


Qualifications

Must be a registered or aspiring Chartered Engineer with a recognised engineering institution and registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working towards registration within 12 months.

UK driving licence.


Additional Information

This is a hybrid role and we will allocate a base location near to your home. Some travel and overnights may be required. You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan. Appropriate training will be given.
