Nurse Specialist – Cancer Information Team Lead

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, highly motivated, and enthusiastic individual to join our cancer information team and work collaboratively within the Cancer Information service. The role is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and will focus on team building. We are looking for someone proactive with a strategic vision for service transformation to lead and develop the cancer information team.

The role will provide day-to-day leadership and responsibility for line management of the deputy information nurse.

* You will have the ability to work autonomously, acting as an independent clinical resource for patients, carers and health care professionals.
* You will have a solid understanding of cancer care and be able to manage patient queries through our drop‑in service, by phone and email.

The successful candidate will work within Dimbleby Cancer Care and alongside the wider Guy's Cancer team, offering personalised care to patients, their family members and carers. There will be opportunity and support to develop your leadership skills and access to regular clinical supervision. The role is based at Guy's Cancer Centre and Guy's Cancer at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical leadership and management support to the Cancer Information team and work alongside the clinical lead to facilitate the development of a highly motivated and specialist knowledge Cancer Information team. Visible leadership is key. They are expected to act as an independent clinical resource for patients, carers, and other health care professionals with regard to support for those affected by cancer. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Personalised Care Lead to support delivery of the HOPE course and other supportive options for patients at the end of their treatment and Living with and beyond Cancer. The post holder will have a solid understanding of cancer care and will manage patient queries through a drop‑in, phone and email service. They will carry out information assessments and will require excellent communication skills plus holistic assessment skills. They will have a good knowledge of support services available to cancer patients, both within and outside the Trust, and be able to signpost and refer patients according to their needs.

The role is based at Guy's Cancer Centre and the post holder is expected to work at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, to be involved in meetings, training, and demonstrate leadership on both sites.


About us

Dimbleby Cancer Care is an information and support service based at Guy's Cancer Centre, London, and at Guy's Cancer at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup. It provides cancer information, psychological support, benefits advice and complementary therapies to patients and carers. The service operates Monday to Friday.


Job responsibilities

Key Relationships

The post holder will have regular and frequent contact with Dimbleby Cancer Care staff and volunteers, service and general managers, tumour‑specific clinical nurse specialists, clinical and medical oncology clinicians and staff, therapy radiographers, ward staff and others treating cancer patients within the Trust. They will also be in close contact with the Citizens Advice Welfare Benefits Team and charities such as Macmillan.


Professional/Statutory Registration

* Nurse: RN1 on the NMC register.


Qualifications/Education

* BSc/1st degree – Registered Nurse
* Your professional knowledge acquired at degree level will be supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level equivalent.
* Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience.
* Leadership Course or previous team leadership experience
* Working towards an MSc
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level with oncology, haematology and surgical oncology services delivering effective patient‑focused care.
* Proven evidence of management and leadership in leading a team
* Experience of delivering patient advocacy
* Experience of audit, research & evidence‑based care
* Experience of working with significant others, e.g. family, partners, of people with cancer
* Experience of working in an information and support setting
* Knowledge of support services and/or benefits
* Experience of working with parents affected by cancer and how to talk with children about cancer
* Experience of working with vulnerable and excluded groups
* Experience of working with an ethnically rich and diverse patient group
* Experience of working with community and primary care professionals in cancer


Skills/Knowledge/Ability

* Previous experience of managing, leading and developing staff
* Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills.
* Proven listening/counselling skills with the ability to manage complex situations and appropriately deliver sensitive and difficult outcomes.
* Evidence of teaching skills.
* Ability to clinically lead and influence staff
* Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
* Sound knowledge of current issues in the profession and practice of nursing
* Time management and organisation skills
* Ability to conduct & evaluate own projects successfully
* Knowledge of current clinical & nursing/AHP research
* Ability to carry out audit and research
* IT Skills
* Knowledge of safeguarding concerns and ability to respond to these in an informed and sensitive manner
* Ability to interpret and analyse complex data and findings
* Undertaken clinical & nursing research
* Attended Level 2 training and Level 2 supervision
* Understanding and managing suicide risk in a compassionate and professional manner
