Job overview Band 7 GI Cancers Clinical Nurse Specialist St Bartholomew's Hospital is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our dynamic Gastrointestinal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. This is a pivotal role for a senior nurse committed to delivering excellence in patient-centred care for individuals with complex GI malignancies. As the GI Cancer CNS, you will operate autonomously, utilizing your specialist knowledge to lead patient pathways, provide expert advice, and drive service improvement within a prestigious and supportive environment. You will work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team to provide expert advice and support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals on GI cancers, across both secondary and primary care. Main duties of the job The successful candidate will take on a multifaceted role, balancing advanced clinical practice with service development and education: • Expert Clinical Practice: Act as a key worker for a defined caseload of GI cancer patients, providing specialist assessment, advice, and holistic care from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. • Patient Education and Support: Lead patient consultations, providing complex information, emotional support, and acting as the main point of contact for patients and their families. • MDT Coordination: Ensure seamless coordination of care across the MDT, contributing expert nursing input to treatment planning meetings, and facilitating rapid access to appropriate services. • Nurse-Led Clinics: Develop and run specialist nurse-led clinics (e.g., pre-treatment assessment, toxicity management, or surveillance). • Service Development: Participate in audit, research, and quality improvement projects specific to the GI Cancer pathway to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. • Education: Provide specialist education and mentorship to ward staff, junior nurses, and other healthcare professionals within the hospital and community settings. Detailed job description and main responsibilities This role requires a dedicated professional with proven specialist skills: • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration. • Significant post-registration experience, with substantial experience at Band 6 or above in oncology, palliative care, or a highly relevant acute GI setting. • Relevant post-registration qualification (e.g., Cancer Care or a specialist clinical module at degree/Master's level). • Demonstrable evidence of advanced physical assessment skills and autonomous decision-making. • In-depth knowledge of current evidence-based practice and treatment modalities for GI cancers. • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to manage complex conversations. Nurse Education Qualification SACT qualification Desirable criteria Working towards Masters degree Level 2 psychology training. Advanced communications course. Experience Essential criteria Has worked in cancer care or related GI speciality for some time. Good working knowledge of treatment of GI cancers from diagnosis through to end of life treatment Desirable criteria Previous CNS experience in this or related field. Knowledge Essential criteria Proven clinical skills in oncology Knowledge of GI cancer pathway. Knowledge of the specific treatment regimens used for this patient group and effects and side effects Skills Essential criteria Good communication skills Ability to work alone and under pressure. Ability to manage complex situations both clinically and managing patients and families. Desirable criteria Presentation skills in order to present and represent patients at MDT.
