Job Title: Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
Department/Clinical Service Unit: Anaesthetics and Critical Care
Location: Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum pro rata
Programmed Activities: 5 PA
Applicants are invited to apply for a 12‑month fixed‑term Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post will commence on 1 October 2026 and will cover a 12‑month sabbatical.
Responsibilities
* To work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team to provide evidence‑based care for all in‑patients.
* To liaise effectively and in a timely manner with surgical, medical, and nursing colleagues and all other healthcare agencies when appropriate.
* To assist in the provision and development of a safe and effective Service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
* To carry out all duties to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within that area of work.
* Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
* Participate in the ICM on‑call rota.
* A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
* To carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy at all times.
* To comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
* On‑call commitments will be 1 in 11 non‑residents for the ICU.
* The postholder may undertake additional employment elsewhere within the remaining 0.5 WTE, provided this does not conflict with duties, on‑call commitments, or the organisation’s governance requirements.
* The successful applicant will add to the existing group of 10 intensive care consultants with sub‑speciality interests in anaesthesia and acute medicine, who are responsible for the 10‑bed ICU.
* Within the department, there will be excellent opportunities to develop personal interests, including echocardiography (including TOE), ultrasound, research, governance, outreach, ICU follow‑up and NHS management.
* Job share arrangements with neighbouring trusts will also be considered on application.
* In addition to general adult medical and surgical patients, the unit supports looking after a high number of paediatric patients requiring stabilising critical care and an interest in this area would be advantageous.
Teaching
* To assist in the professional supervision and management of trainee medical staff.
* To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
* To participate in the education and teaching of nursing and ODP staff.
Research and Audit
* To be actively involved in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development.
* To implement audit and research findings as appropriate.
Management & Communication
* To participate in all aspects of Service Line and Hospital affairs, including attendance at Consultant Meetings and to represent the department on appropriate committees/working parties when required.
* To develop and monitor performance indicators for the anaesthetic and critical care service and implement action as necessary.
* To assist in the effective handling of patients’ complaints.
The Trust has close clinical and academic ties with Oxford University Hospitals and the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with both Oxford and University of Buckingham Medical Schools (BMS).
