About the Pupils and Their Needs
As a day-to-day supply teacher, you may work with pupils who:
* Have autism spectrum conditions with communication differences and sensory needs
* Experience moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)
* Have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
* Find social interaction challenging or need support interpreting social cues
* Have cognitive delays affecting processing and memory
* Experience sensory overload, shutdowns, or require structured sensory breaks
* Feel anxious during changes, transitions, or unfamiliar tasks
Clear routines, calm communication, and flexible teaching approaches are key to success in supply settings.
Role Responsibilities
As an SEN Supply Teacher, you will:
* Deliver pre-planned lessons and adapt activities to meet individual needs
* Support classroom routines and maintain a calm, structured environment
* Work closely with TAs and follow guidance from SENCOs and class teachers
* Use visual supports, communication systems, and sensory strategies where needed
* Build quick, positive relationships to support engagement
* Contribute to personal care routines when required
* Maintain safeguarding, behaviour, and classroom management expectations set by each school
For longer-term supply, planning and assessment responsibilities may be required, and pay will align with the Teacher Pay Scale.
