Primary and secondary SEN (Special Educational Needs) schools and specialist provisions in Winchester and the surrounding areas are seeking reliable, adaptable supply teachers from January onwards. Roles range from day-to-day cover to short-term placements, with opportunities for longer-term supply for those who want consistency.

These schools support pupils with autism, learning difficulties, communication needs, sensory processing differences, and a wide range of cognitive and developmental profiles. Supply teachers who can step into different classes, follow established routines, and deliver engaging, personalised learning are in high demand.


About the Pupils and Their Needs

As a day-to-day supply teacher, you may work with pupils who:

* Have autism spectrum conditions with communication differences and sensory needs

* Experience moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)

* Have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)

* Find social interaction challenging or need support interpreting social cues

* Have cognitive delays affecting processing and memory

* Experience sensory overload, shutdowns, or require structured sensory breaks

* Feel anxious during changes, transitions, or unfamiliar tasks

Clear routines, calm communication, and flexible teaching approaches are key to success in supply settings.


Role Responsibilities

As an SEN Supply Teacher, you will:

* Deliver pre-planned lessons and adapt activities to meet individual needs

* Support classroom routines and maintain a calm, structured environment

* Work closely with TAs and follow guidance from SENCOs and class teachers

* Use visual supports, communication systems, and sensory strategies where needed

* Build quick, positive relationships to support engagement

* Contribute to personal care routines when required

* Maintain safeguarding, behaviour, and classroom management expectations set by each school

For longer-term supply, planning and assessment responsibilities may be required, and pay will align with the Teacher Pay Scale.

* Type of work: Day-to-day supply, short-term cover, and longer-term bookings

* Flexible hours: Full-time or part-time availability welcomed

* Term-time only

* Competitive daily rates, with MPS/UPS rates for long-term assignments

* CPD: Opportunities for ongoing training including autism, sensory regulation, and communication approaches

Requirements

* QTS or QTLS

* Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)
