Location: Polaris House, Swindon (Hybrid Working - 1 day a week in office)

Job Overview:

The Web Content Designer sits in the web team, part of External Affairs and Communications.

The web team is a multidisciplinary team of content, product and delivery experts who drive forward the continuous improvement of the website making it simpler and easier for people to understand and use.

As a Web Content Designer, your role is to work ensure our core business as usual web content is of a high standard, meets the needs of external audiences and is published in a timely way.

This is an exciting time for the web team as we evolve our web content strategy and content operations to support a usable, sustainable, accessible website into the future. The Web Content Designer role will evolve as this work progresses over the coming months.

Previous content design experience is not required. This role would suit someone with previous web content editing experience who can demonstrate a desire to develop in a content design role.

Key Responsibilities:

The Web Content Designer works with the Web Content Editors and Web Coordinator bringing user-centered design thinking to our delivery of core web content. This content includes funding opportunities, impact stories, blog posts, publications, areas of investment and support and news.

You will also work on the design of other new web content ensuring the website accurately reflects UKRI activity and provides external audiences with the information they need.

Reporting to the Web Delivery Lead, you will work proactively to support the governance and management of ukri.org.

You will work closely with stakeholders and subject experts across the organisation and be accountable for ensuring web content is high quality, accurate and accessible.

As a Web Content Designer, you will:

* Manage, edit and publish a range of content on ukri.org including HTML publications
* Shape content standards and guidance including HTML, 2i, content management system (CMS) and accessibility
* Ensure unneeded content is removed from the website in line with the content retention policy
* Identify opportunities and work with subject experts to design new and existing content so it is easy to understand and presented in the right format
* Support team training and upskilling in content design and management processes
* Work closely with the Web Coordinator advising on content design needs and requests and cover coordination of web content requests as needed
* Prioritise your work and adapt as the team or organisational priorities change
* Participate in and lead as required on content design and team ceremonies
* Foster collaborative working with a network of internal stakeholders, influencing and negotiating to make decisions that work for external users and the organisation
* Stay up to date with UKRI website users’ needs and research
* Contribute to the improvement of web team workflows and processes
* Participate in the out of hours web publishing rota (additional allowance given)

Essential

* English and Maths GCSE (S)
* Excellent editorial, proofreading and English language skills. (S)
* Ability to train colleagues either in groups or one to one. (S)
* Knowledge of digital and web best practice, Government Digital Service standards and user-centred design. (S)
* Experience of using web content management systems and working on a large information-rich website. (S & I)
* An awareness of content design, its benefits and an aspiration to develop a career in content design (S & I)
* Excellent organisational and collaboration skills with the ability to work on multiple concurrent pieces of work with different deadlines. (S & I)
* Experience in stakeholder management, building positive working relationships, and understanding other perspectives to successfully influence and negotiate. (S & I)
* Understand how to work in an open and collaborative environment, sharing your content acting on constructive feedback from other web team members. (S & I)
* Experience of improving content processes, guidelines and standards. (I)

Desirable

* Understanding of the UKRI web landscape. (S)
* Content design training. (S)
* Experience designing content to meet user needs. (I)
* Familiar with agile project management techniques. (I)
