Job Description: Volunteer Role Title:Volunteer Legal Affairs Advisor. Organisation: Nurture the Children International – a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity number: 1173351) / committed to [brief one-sentence mission, e.g. advancing education / relieving poverty / protecting the environment / supporting vulnerable communities globally]. Location: Fully remote / home-based (UK preferred for ease of communication and understanding of UK charity law) Occasional virtual meetings via Zoom/Teams with trustees, staff, and potentially international partners No requirement for travel, though flexibility to join occasional calls in different time zones would be helpful. Hours: Flexible – approximately 4–10 hours per week (arranged around your availability) Minimum commitment of 9–18 months preferred to cover the key planning and setup phases Role Purpose: To provide specialist legal research, advice, and drafting support to the charity’s trustees and senior team as we plan and establish our first international office and develop safe, compliant international volunteer operations. This volunteer role will help ensure all activities remain within UK charity law requirements while addressing the legal and regulatory complexities of operating overseas. Main Responsibilities: Research and advise on legal structures and options for establishing an international presence (e.g. branch operations, subsidiary entity, partnership models, or registration as a local charity/NGO in the target country) Identify and summarise key legal and regulatory requirements in target countries for charity operations, including registration, local governance, employment/volunteer laws, data protection, and tax implications Support due diligence processes for potential international partners, local entities, or office locations (e.g. reviewing local NGO laws, anti-corruption risks, sanctions lists, and political/security stability) Assist in reviewing and drafting key documents such as: international partnership/MOU templates, volunteer agreements for overseas placements, risk management policies for international work, and compliance checklists Advise on UK charity law compliance when working internationally (e.g. Charity Commission guidance on managing risks overseas, safeguarding, financial controls, due diligence on partners, and avoiding prohibited activities) Help develop policies and procedures for recruiting, placing, managing, and insuring international volunteers (covering visas, insurance, safeguarding, health & safety, and repatriation) Flag potential risks (reputational, operational, financial, legal) associated with international expansion and recommend mitigation steps Maintain accurate records of research, advice given, and documents produced (using shared secure tools such as Google Drive or the charity’s document system) Provide occasional updates to trustees via written summaries or short virtual briefings Skills and Experience (Essential): Qualified solicitor/barrister (England & Wales, Scotland, or equivalent jurisdiction) or very experienced legal professional (e.g. chartered legal executive, in-house counsel) Strong research skills and ability to access reliable legal resources (e.g. LexisNexis, Westlaw, official government sites, Charity Commission guidance) Excellent written and analytical skills – ability to produce clear, concise advice and documents tailored to non-legal audiences (trustees/staff) Good understanding of UK charity law (Charities Act 2011, Charity Commission guidance on international working) Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently while meeting agreed deadlines Comfortable working remotely and communicating clearly via email/Teams Desirable (but not essential): Experience advising charities or non-profits on international operations, cross-border structuring, or overseas activities Knowledge of common legal issues in international charity work (e.g. local registration requirements, anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing compliance, sanctions, safeguarding overseas, volunteer/employment law differences) Familiarity with Charity Commission guidance: “Charities: how to manage risks when working internationally” and related due diligence expectations Exposure to NGO/partnership agreements, risk registers, or international volunteer programmes Language skills relevant to target countries (if known) Understanding of related areas such as GDPR/international data transfers, insurance for overseas activities, or immigration/visas for volunteers What We Offer: Opportunity to apply your legal expertise to meaningful international charitable impact Valuable experience in charity governance and international non-profit law Support from trustees and senior staff (including induction, regular check-ins, and access to relevant documents) Flexible remote working with no fixed hours Out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed per our volunteer expenses policy (e.g. any specialist legal database access if agreed in advance – rare) Acknowledgement of your contribution (e.g. thanks in annual report/website, with consent) Professional reference after sustained contribution (6 months) Job Types: Part-time, Volunteer Benefits: Referral programme Work Location: Remote How to apply:- Intrested Candidates can send their CV to ssharma@nurturethechildren.org.uk
