Diversity and Inclusion

We are committed to creating an open, supportive environment where everyone feels they belong. We encourage all candidates, including those who do not meet every single requirement, to apply.

About the Role

The North West Structures Team manages some of the UK’s most iconic railway heritage, from the unique historic Runcorn Bridge to the modern Ordsall Cord bridge. A range of enhancement projects and our ambitious Capital Delivery and Operational Maintenance programmes are underway.

You will provide engineering expertise on structure matters, support the Building & Civils Asset Management team, and collaborate with other departments to achieve effective asset management outcomes.

Responsibilities

* Plan and oversee inspections, assessments and monitoring of structural assets; evaluate reports against company standards and implement mitigation measures where required.
* Prioritise and manage responses to defects and issues, develop work plans, and oversee the delivery of key maintenance and improvement tasks, including creating asset‑specific strategies and progressing any deferred actions.
* Conduct engineering evaluations and risk assessments to inform maintenance, strengthening, renewal, and risk mitigation plans based on asset condition, capability trends and failure precursors.
* Support the development of enhancement schemes and collaborate with other teams to align with broader network goals.
* Determine mitigation actions to reduce the impact of adverse weather on structure performance.
* Maintain structures asset data and information within the company systems and processes.
* Help shape national standards and internal policies, maintain accurate asset data, and contribute to strategic planning, including input into the CP8 bid process.
* Support incident investigations and review proposals that may impact structural assets.
* Review proposals from other disciplines or external organisations that could impact route structures or work programmes to identify potential synergies or conflicts.
* Provide safety‑critical engineering decisions for issues raised during asset management activities, including participation on the rotated on‑call engineer roster.
* Assist with approval of abnormal loads and ensure technical requirements are met in project designs, working closely with the Route Asset Manager on design approvals and certifications.

Qualifications and Experience

* HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
* Substantial relevant experience in structures or civil engineering.
* A sound knowledge of structures engineering policies and standards.
* Knowledge of Structures Assessment.
* An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.
* Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution.
* Hold a valid UK driving licence, or be eligible and willing to obtain one.

Preferred but not essential:

* Degree in a relevant subject.
* Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer status.
* Member of a relevant professional institution.

Note: The role may require on‑call work and shift patterns, including nights and weekends.

Salary and Benefits

* Salary: Band 4C, starting at £43,588, increasing to £51,719.
* Pro‑rata annual leave entitlement (28 days contract dependent).
* Access to discounted offers: childcare vouchers, healthcare benefits, cycle‑to‑work scheme, healthcare club discounts, and others.
* Subsidies up to 75% on rail and underground season tickets.
* 75% discount on leisure travel (discretionary).
* A choice of contributory pension schemes.
* 2 weeks paid reserve leave for Armed Forces community members.
