About the Role
The North West Structures Team manages some of the UK’s most iconic railway heritage, from the unique historic Runcorn Bridge to the modern Ordsall Cord bridge. A range of enhancement projects and our ambitious Capital Delivery and Operational Maintenance programmes are underway.
You will provide engineering expertise on structure matters, support the Building & Civils Asset Management team, and collaborate with other departments to achieve effective asset management outcomes.
Responsibilities
* Plan and oversee inspections, assessments and monitoring of structural assets; evaluate reports against company standards and implement mitigation measures where required.
* Prioritise and manage responses to defects and issues, develop work plans, and oversee the delivery of key maintenance and improvement tasks, including creating asset‑specific strategies and progressing any deferred actions.
* Conduct engineering evaluations and risk assessments to inform maintenance, strengthening, renewal, and risk mitigation plans based on asset condition, capability trends and failure precursors.
* Support the development of enhancement schemes and collaborate with other teams to align with broader network goals.
* Determine mitigation actions to reduce the impact of adverse weather on structure performance.
* Maintain structures asset data and information within the company systems and processes.
* Help shape national standards and internal policies, maintain accurate asset data, and contribute to strategic planning, including input into the CP8 bid process.
* Support incident investigations and review proposals that may impact structural assets.
* Review proposals from other disciplines or external organisations that could impact route structures or work programmes to identify potential synergies or conflicts.
* Provide safety‑critical engineering decisions for issues raised during asset management activities, including participation on the rotated on‑call engineer roster.
* Assist with approval of abnormal loads and ensure technical requirements are met in project designs, working closely with the Route Asset Manager on design approvals and certifications.
Qualifications and Experience
* HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
* Substantial relevant experience in structures or civil engineering.
* A sound knowledge of structures engineering policies and standards.
* Knowledge of Structures Assessment.
* An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.
* Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution.
* Hold a valid UK driving licence, or be eligible and willing to obtain one.
Preferred but not essential:
* Degree in a relevant subject.
* Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer status.
* Member of a relevant professional institution.
Note: The role may require on‑call work and shift patterns, including nights and weekends.

* Salary: Band 4C, starting at £43,588, increasing to £51,719.
