Job Summary
To undertake ultrasound imaging in a highly professional manner, and act as an accepted clinical expert in their Clinical Speciality.
Responsibilities
* Participate in departmental peer review of images with the Fetal Medicine Consultant and Obstetric Lead.
* Supervise clinical cases for trainee sonographers.
* Train medical staff in obstetrics & gynaecology.
* Ensure the sonographer adheres to the strict growth scan protocol for women between 28 weeks and term; direct cases for placental location, twin pregnancies, or other complications to the main ultrasound department.
* Adhere to the 3rd Trimester protocol and guidelines; refer abnormalities or complications to the Fetal Medicine Consultant or relevant department; obtain second opinion from the FMC or a sonographer from the main ultrasound department.
* Perform 3rd Trimester scans according to Obstetric and Fetal Medicine Consultant guidelines – focusing on fetal heart rate, HC, AC, FL, liquor volume, Doppler analysis, and placental position only; other anatomical structures are not examined.
* Ensure compliance with child protection and vulnerable adult legislation.
* Use the Viewpoint reporting programme to produce written reports for the handheld notes and post‑process examination on the CRIS database.
* Conform to professional standards dictated by SoR BMUS and FASP; incorporate East Sussex Obstetric Ultrasound Guidelines, NICE guidelines, and RCOG guidance within local Trust ultrasound guidelines.
Qualifications
* Evidence of further training at Masters Level or equivalent.
* Lower‑to‑middle management training or qualification.
Experience
* Minimum 2 years postgraduate experience in Ultrasound.
* Evidence of advanced level CPD in specialist skill area.
* Evidence of wide‑ranging experience within the speciality.
Skills
* Mentorship of junior staff and trainees.
* Academic teaching experience.
* Deputise for Lead – clinical and managerial leadership.
* Ability to undertake self‑audit and peer review.
* National and regional audit activity including presentational competencies.
