About the role
To manage and assure the technical and design aspects of electricity network connections from LV up to 11kV, ensuring all works comply with Distribution Network Operator (DNO) standards, IDNO standards, statutory regulations, and NERS accreditation requirements. The role also leads the internal design team and oversees external design partners to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant designs.
As a Technical Design Manager you will
Implement and maintain design standards, procedures, and templates in line with NERS, IDNO and DNO requirements.
Manage and document design risk assessments, and design reviews before submission and conduct periodic internal technical audits of design outputs.
Ensure as-built drawings and records are prepared, verified, and submitted correctly, Act as the Ipsum ICP technical authority for all LV and 11kV design works and ensure all designs, drawings, and documentation comply with:
NERS design and design-checking requirements.
ENA Engineering Recommendations (e.g., G99, G100, G94, etc.).
DNO/IDNO technical standards and connection policies.
Maintain and oversee the NERS design scope, ensuring evidence and audit readiness.
Coordinate and manage NERS design audits and any corrective actions required.
Maintain and/or attain DNO Approved Designer status with UKPN, SSE, NGED, SPEN, NPG, ENW
Attain self-determination of point of connection status with targeted DNOs
Drive continuous improvement in design quality, tools, and efficiency.
Introduce and manage use of CAD, GIS, and electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Amtech, CYMCAP).
Stay up to date with changes in IDNO/DNO policies, ENA standards, and regulatory frameworks.
About you
* Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
* Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it (desirable). I Eng acceptable.
* Proven experience in LV/11kV distribution network design.
* Familiarity with NERS design and design-checking roles.
* Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
* Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards, such as All UKPN DNOs, leading IDNPs, ENA Engineering Recommendations
* Experience in electrical design, ideally in a utility or ICP context and using relevant design software, such as AutoCAD
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders
* Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome design challenges
* Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver on time and within budget
* Full UK driving license
