Smurfit Westrock is offering an exciting opportunity for a Design Degree Apprentice to join our innovative team in Weston-super-Mare. This is your chance to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic packaging environment while studying towards a recognised qualification. The Degree Industry-Led & Practical; Designed by and for the packaging sector, the course blends academic study with real-world application. Apprentices develop knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) through workplace projects and reflective learning Delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam Art & Design over a 4 Year program Each academic year has a multiple module structure, that helps manage student workload, and pairs academic assignments with real world workplace opportunities. Modules range from broad industry introductions, project management investigations, deep dives into complex sustainability theory, right through to engineering centred packaging technology assignments. 80/20 model. This means 20% of your time is dedicated to ‘off the job learning’. This includes all taught sessions and opportunities to work on assignments. 80% is delivered as on the job learning delivery real solutions to the New Product Development Department. Support & Facilities; Apprentices receive coaching, access to university resources (including 3D printing and remote software), and benefit from guest lectures and cross-sector insights. In-person attendance is required for 66 days across the programme Main Responsibilities As a Design Degree Apprentice, you will: Co-create with purpose : Work together with customers, internal teams, and external suppliers to craft packaging solutions that are not only practical but also innovative and tailored to real-world needs. Drive projects from spark to finish : Manage design enquiries and sample requests with professionalism and speed—from the first concept brief to final delivery. Be the connector : Act as the vital link between Sales and Operations, ensuring everyone’s on the same page and every detail is crystal clear. Champion precision : Guarantee that all factory-issued information aligns perfectly with customer specifications—no compromises. Design with impact : Create precise CAD drawings and packaging designs that power both customer satisfaction and operational excellence. Bring ideas to life : Produce physical samples that customers can touch, test, and approve—turning concepts into reality. Master the tools : Use design systems and business software like a pro, keeping projects smooth and efficient. Visualise the future : Develop stunning conceptual artwork, 3D visuals, and mock-ups that make ideas pop and presentations shine. Desired Qualifications We’re looking for candidates with: GCSEs (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English Language at grade C / grade 4 or above. 112 UCAS points, including at least 64 points from two A Levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. Must include Mathematics or a mathematics-based subject to at least AS level. Example combinations: BBC at A Level, including Mathematics or a related subject, plus one other from Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Chemistry, or other science/technology subjects. DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a science or technology-based subject (with passes in Mathematics and two other relevant modules). A combination of qualifications that includes Mathematics or a mathematics-based subject, and may include AS levels, EPQ, or General Studies. Why Join Us?
