Job Description – SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

Purpose of the Role
The SENCO is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the nursery's Special Educational Needs (SEN) policy and ensuring that children with additional needs receive the support they require. They will work closely with staff, parents, and external professionals to promote inclusion, early intervention, and the best possible outcomes for every child.
Key Responsibilities1. Leadership and Coordination
* Lead on the implementation of the nursery's SEND policy.
* Ensure early identification of children with additional needs and coordinate support.
* Maintain accurate records of children with SEND, including assessments, support plans, and progress reviews.
* Coordinate and chair regular meetings regarding children with SEND.
* Support for Children
* Ensure children with SEND have access to high-quality teaching, tailored resources, and inclusive opportunities.
* Monitor progress and adjust support strategies as needed.
* Promote positive behaviour, wellbeing, and full participation in nursery life.
* Support for Staff
* Provide guidance and training to nursery staff on SEND practices, strategies, and legislation.
* Support staff to implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) / Support Plans effectively.
* Model inclusive teaching and learning strategies.
* Working with Parents and Carers
* Establish strong, positive relationships with parents and carers.
* Ensure parents are fully informed and involved in decisions about their child's support.
* Provide advice and signpost parents to external support services where appropriate.
* Liaison with External Agencies
* Act as the key contact for local authority SEN services, health professionals, and educational psychologists.
* Coordinate referrals and contribute to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) processes.
* Ensure effective partnership working to support children's individual needs.
* Compliance and Policy
* Stay up to date with SEND legislation, SEND trainings EYFS requirements, and best practice.
* Ensure the nursery complies with the Equality Act 2010 and SEND Code of Practice.
* Regularly review and update the nursery's SEND policy and procedures.
Person Specification
Essential
SENCO qualification -Desirable Level 3
* Recognised Level 3+ childcare qualification (or equivalent).
* Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and EYFS statutory framework.
* Experience of working with children with additional needs in an early years setting.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills.
* Ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external professionals.
Desirable
* Knowledge of multi-agency working and EHCP processes.
