Charge Nurse, £6000 Recruitment/Retention Payment

Responsibilities
As a Charge Nurse you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day running of a learning disability assessment and treatment service, supervising assigned nurses and assisting the Team Leader in maintaining effective teamwork. You will exercise significant initiative, maintain calm, friendly and efficient attitudes with patients, relatives, colleagues and external professionals.
* Supervise named nurses, ensuring they develop appropriate care plans.
* Ensure all staff are fully conversant with the service user’s care and treatment.
* Identify individual care needs, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes in collaboration with the unit nursing team and MDT.
* Maintain close liaison with all staff involved and report progress to the MDT.
* Participate in ward rounds and case conferences; prepare reports as required.
* Be aware of all policy documents and legal requirements (e.g., MHA) and ensure adherence.
* Demonstrate appropriate clinical practice and serve as an example for staff.
* Ensure compliance with NMC codes of conduct, relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
* Participate in assessment, management, care planning and review of individuals referred to the unit as appropriate, with relevant disciplines.
Leadership and Staff Management
* Exercise leadership and develop constructive relationships with MDT and unit staff.
* Ensure adherence to Trust policies, procedures, NMC guidelines and protocols.
* Monitor and review sickness/absence in partnership with the Team Leader.
* Participate in recruitment and selection of junior staff.
* Engage in clinical supervision and formal appraisal systems.
* Contribute to orientation/induction and training programmes for staff.
* Maintain a therapeutic environment conducive to staff and service user well‑being.
* Develop and deliver regular teaching sessions within the clinical environment.
* Mentor student nurses and support them.
* Act as site nurse in charge out of hours on a rotational basis.
* Step in as acting Team Leader when required.
* Take charge of the unit as required.
Educational Achievements, Qualifications and Training
* RMN/RLDN or Dip/BSc (Hons) in Mental Health/ Learning Disability Nursing.
* ENB 998 / Preceptorship and Mentorship qualification.
Experience
* Relevant experience at Band 5 level.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Experience working in other secure services.
Skills and Abilities

* Confidence to work autonomously, use initiative, and make decisions in complex situations.
* Skill in providing and receiving complex, sensitive, or contentious information, including motivational, negotiating, training, empathic, or reassuring skills.

* Experience in risk assessment and management.
* Capability to cope with unpredictable work patterns and frequent interruptions.
* Understanding of legal frameworks such as MHA.
* Implementation of quality improvement initiatives.

Maintain NMC Registration
The post holder must maintain current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Salary and Benefits
Annual salary: £39,959 to £48,117.
Annual bonus of £6,000.
Recruitment and retention premium: £6,000 per year on top of Band 6 salary (subject to terms and conditions).
Contract and Working Pattern
Contract: Permanent.
Working pattern: Full‑time.
Post involves 24‑hour rotation with extra payments for unsocial hours.
